It's not quite the Pillsbury Bake-Off. But as Ventura County cooking events go, the recipe contest held in conjunction with the California Strawberry Festival is almost as traditional — and as hotly anticipated.

Helping stoke that anticipation is the fact that the Berry Blast Off contest in recent years has included some fun, "Iron Chef"-style elements, with a truly grand prize going to the winner. Out: festival T-shirts and dust-catcher logo wine glasses. In: a cruise, which this year will be supplied by Shell Vacations Club. (The club owns resort timeshare properties in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, so we're hoping the grand prize doesn't also come with a timeshare pitch.)

Original strawberry recipes in all categories are welcome, from dips and drinks to appetizers, entrees and desserts. Submitted recipes must not involve baking, although grilling, frying and cooking on a stove top are OK. Also, the combined preparation and presentation time must not exceed 60 minutes.

The deadline for submitting recipes is noon April 30.

Recipes may be submitted by fax to 385-4729, by e-mail (as both a memo and an attachment) to csf@strawberry-fest.org and by mail to California Strawberry Festival, Attention: Berry Blast Off, 1661 Pacific Ave., Space 15, Oxnard, CA 93033.

Five contestants will be selected to prepare their recipes during a timed competition May 6 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Oxnard.

After judging on the basis of flavor, ease of preparation and creative use of strawberries, two competitors and their respective recipes will advance to a grand-prize cook-off May 17, the first day of the 25th annual California Strawberry Festival.
