Garrett Lemire Foundation Donates Books to Ventura Schools
The Garrett Lemire Safety and Education Program presented eighty new library books to the principals of the Ventura School District Thursday, March 27th as part of an effort to promote bicycling safety in local elementary schools. This non-profit program is funded by the annual Garrett Lemire Memorial Grand Prix, an annual elite cycling race that takes place in downtown Ojai on Sunday, April 13th. Festivities include a children's race, a bike raffle, climbing wall, jolly jump and coloring contest. All racers, age 12 and under, receive a free helmet, t-shirt and medal. All activities are free for children. The Garrett Lemire Grand Prix is a professional cycling race that hosts the best cyclists from around the world. Now in its fifth season, the race is a memorial tribute to Garrett Lemire, a talented local cyclist who wanted to share his love of cycling with the community. The books presented to the Ventura School District include Gus and Grandpa and the Two-Wheeled Bike, Look Out! A Story About Safety on Bicycles, and What Happens at a Bike Shop. They will be available for purchase at the race. The books were selected with grammar school students in mind and span the range of young readers between kindergarten through sixth grade. The themes of these books focus on bicycling safety, teamwork, self esteem, and personal and community accountability. The program directors hope to supply every Ventura School District library with these books before the end of 2009.
