Smoking ban approved in Oxnard
The Oxnard Housing Authority Board of Commissioners has approved a ban on smoking in the agency's senior public housing complexes.
The rule prohibits residents of Plaza Vista and Palm Vista, both on South C Street in Oxnard's downtown business district, from smoking in their apartments, common areas or within 30 feet of the buildings. The buildings, operated by the Housing Authority, have a total of 150 units.
The board members, which include the members of the Oxnard City Council and two others, unanimously approved the ban Tuesday night at the council's meeting.
Residents are responsible for ensuring that family members or guests comply with the policy. Residents who violate the rule will be notified in writing by the Housing Authority staff, and residents can face termination of their leases if they violate the policy more than three times.
A recent survey conducted by the Housing Authority indicated that more than 70 percent of residents of the two buildings would prefer to live in a non-smoking building.
