Camarillo High wrestler Jonathan Urango is a real road warrior.

Since the time he was a sixth-grader, Urango has spent his summer vacations traveling to various freestyle wrestling events in cities across the United States.

The talented junior credits that experience with helping to turn him into one of the best wrestlers in California.

"I've gone to a lot of tough tournaments, including the nationals in Fargo (North Dakota)" said Urango. "Wrestling so much helps me with my conditioning and makes me stronger for the season."

The system has worked well for Urango. This season he finished second at both the CIF-Southern Section Tournament and the Masters Meet, and followed that by finishing fourth at the State Tournament, the best finish of any wrestler in the county.

Urango's season earned him The Star's Wrestler of the Year honor.

"I love to travel," Urango said of his busy summers. "I like going to new places and meeting different people. But I don't go for a vacation. I go to wrestle."

While he's got another year of high school, Urango is already getting plenty of interest from colleges, including Stanford and Princeton. His choice?

"If I could go anywhere, I would pick Oklahoma State (one of the top wrestling programs in the country)," Urango said.
