Two men suspected of painting graffiti

Acting on a tip, Oxnard police officers caught two men believed be responsible for spray painting graffiti in the area around Channel Islands Boulevard and Saviers Road late Saturday.

The two men were being held in Ventura County Jail on Sunday on 13 counts of felony vandalism, two counts of misdemeanor vandalism, felony conspiracy to commit vandalism and other misdemeanor charges.

A witness called police after seeing the two men, Robert Abraham Yanez, 21, of Simi Valley and Rudy Flores Jr., 18, of Fillmore, painting script onto businesses near the intersection just before 10 p.m. Saturday.

According to a police report, when officers arrived, they saw the two, who immediately started running when they saw police.

The two were quickly caught, however. Among the charges they face is a misdemeanor delaying/resisting a peace officer.

The two were booked into the County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bond each.

OK, what is the gang that "owns" that part of town? Aren't they supposed to keep outsiders out? Talk about falling down on the job. What happened to the "where you from" followed by gun shots. You just can't count on anyone to do their job properly anymore. Well, I guess the police will have to pick up the slack then. Step it up guys, or we'll have to get in a new gang to do the job properly.

$200k bail each, that'll keep'em locked up until their trial, where they'll drop all the felonies in exchange for a guilty plea on the misdemeanors and each get 20 hrs. of community service. A more appropriate punishment should be removal of their thumbs.

removal of their forefingers with a chisel followed by a dose of sea salt!

Desdave,LOL that was too much !
Well glad they caught the little punks. Yeah I know they were adults who just never matured! I dont think they will get off on all the charges. They may drop a few to keep it from going to trial and save money But not all.
Good Job Officers !!!!!!

The irony, these kids never turn in their homework, yet write on the walls under the cover of night. The punishment should be 2000 hours of community service cleaning up the city and graffiti.

Nice one Star "painting script on to businesses", let's just call it what it is "tagging" or "graffiti". They make it sound like they are putting calligraphy on a building to enhance it.

Suejones you are soooo right! LOL
I want to know why these losers came all the way from Simi and Fillmore to tag in Oxnard???
I hope the city sticks to their "You Spray, You Pay" tagline and really make these 2 guys pay for what they did. I agree with CamarilloMan, community service cleaning up grafitti would be an excellent punishment and would be far more effective, I think, than just sitting them in a jail cell.

Felony graffiti vandalism. Watch carefully to see what our courts do to these idiots.

Why these kids coming from different cities to tag in Oxnard? What are our walls a long piece of poster paper waiting to get painted? The police should continue to encourage those who witness these taggers to call it in. Alot of cases could be solved if the people started talking, and the police started listening instead of filing a report and calling it a day.

I still think that anyone caught for doing graffiti or tagging should be made to dress in pink jump suits and spend a minimum of a month cleaning up their and other losers handy work.

Community Service?
They can start by painting my garage, while wearing shocking pink jumpsuits.

desdave...hilarious!

TimeArrow...what potential sentence could these two "artists" be facing?

Capitol punishment for vandals. No respect for us, No respect for them.

desdave.... art is not gang realted

Posted by wdwinder1 on March 24, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

waasup: vandalism isn't art. Maybe you'ld like to have these losers come put their 'art' on your parent's house, or maybe your car? Yeah, I didn't think so.

BeaHappi: The laws are a bit complex, but do have some bite if used as intended. Relevant Penal Code excerpts on vandalism including graffiti (shortened and paraphrased):

If amount of damage is $400 or more, imprisonment in the state prison or county jail not exceeding a year, or by fine not exceeding $10,000. If the amount of damage is $10,000 or more, by fine of not more than $50,000, or by both the fine and imprisonment.

If the amount of damage is less than $400, imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year, by a fine of not more than $1,000, or by both the fine and imprisonment.

If the amount of defacement, damage, or destruction is less than $400, and the defendant has been previously convicted of vandalism or affixing graffiti or other inscribed material (such as glass etching), vandalism is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail for not more than one year, or by a fine of not more than five thousand $5,000, or by both that fine and imprisonment.

Also included are provisions for cleanup by the graffiti vandals that can be additive to any other punishment. If the vandal is a minor, there are provisions for involving parents in the cleanup for periods up to a year, if my memory serves me correctly. If there were a way to use citizen volunteers to supervise the parents, we’d probably be able to get more parents out there.

Persons wanting to report a graffiti vandal are usually afraid of repercussions. They can, however, submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers while becoming eligible for a reward up to $1,000 if the tip leads to an arrest.

Tips can be submitted via our bilingual call center. Now up and running, tips can be submitted via the web or text message ... both of which facilitate 2-way communications with us all the while protecting the caller's identity. Digital photos can be submitted via the web link.

Since the first publication of Most Wanted of Ventura County in the 1/16/07 Star, over 100 of the fugitives have been arrested or turned themselves in. We see complaints over trivial errors in stories, but please know that the Star invested heavily in the partnership with Crime Stoppers … and it is working better than you’ll ever know.

Go to: http://www.venturacountycrimestoppers... for info on how to submit a tip.

if someone came over and put some "art" on their car or house, they'd get mad, and somehow they think it's alright to do it to other ppls property...I like the chisel/salt idea.

remove the index finger of their dominant hand so they can't press the button on the top of a spray can...

Hey CloudyDaze,

Too bad they were not even charged with felonies!

Misdemeanor... I doubt they will spend any time in jail.

....Line them up and shoot them if you want my opinion....

Posted by Robert_Worthley on March 24, 2008 at 3:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

ReadMyLipsNoNewTaxes, the article actually covered it. Breaking it down, Yanez faces around 15 felony and four misdemeanor charges. Flores has one felony and two misdemeanor charges. OPD did a great job on this one. If others in the criminal justice system and courts can perform as well as the cops, we'll have won this one.

Good, two less idiots defacing, and attributing to the devalue of our county. Lame tag-bangers!

Posted by eguzie on March 24, 2008 at 4:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

sure grafitti can be art if it is done right, and legally! But now a days, its just stupid kids running around scribbling on walls, it makes no sense and i dont know why they do it, i hope they stay in jail for a while.

Posted by pfg93003 on March 24, 2008 at 7:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

This is the first time I ever heard of someone getting caught tagging. We to get more taggers off the street. I personally think those two if found guilty should spend every day for at least a year cleaning graffiti in brad daylight so the low-life gang bangers can see them.
Hooray for the citizens!
But I live in Ventura and it would cost me $17.88 to report them.

hey pfg you can call from your cell phone wait to get transfered to the right agency ventura police ,sheriff dept.animal regulation or whoever get transfered put on hold and then cut off right before they pick up because your cell phone battery died doooh...and that wouls only cost 16.86 in air time fees.

Posted by AnnaWhaat on March 25, 2008 at 7:02 a.m. (Suggest removal)

This phone tax, since you brought it up is really confusing me! I was under the impression that if it was a call for someone else there would be no fee. Only for home personnal calls to your own house or protection would you be charged. Whats the deal???????

I think the "art" comment was sarcastic. Glad these losers got caught but sooooo many more to go.
