Park board OKs first phase of Simi dog park

The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District board unanimously approved on Thursday the first phase of a long-awaited, off-leash dog park in Simi Valley.

The board's decision authorizes the solicitation of bids for the installation of a water mainline for irrigation at the park. It is the first phase of a seven-phase plan to build the dog park, which will be on 3 acres on Lost Canyons Drive, just off the north end of Erringer Road. The dog park would extend Big Sky Park, a softball complex near the Big Sky housing development.

Shea Homes owns the dog park site, which now serves as a deposit site for excess soil throughout the development of the Big Sky community.

Ed Hayduk, the district's assistant general manager, said city officials are waiting for Shea Homes to grade the dog park site, but that won't delay the park's first phase, which should be completed by June. The water mainline will be added to an existing water line, and will travel up a slope and along an access road into the dog run at the park.

Hayduk said city officials are hoping Shea Homes representatives complete this spring their part of a developer's agreement, which includes grading of the site and construction of an access road.

If the work is done on time, the Park District can complete the remaining phases of the park by fall.

The remaining phases include construction of a parking lot; installation of fences and entrance gates; installation of an irrigation system; fine grading of the site; installation of site furniture and signage; and hydroseeding of the park.

Hayduk said the dog park, which will be built with $500,000 from park improvement district funds, is highly anticipated by dog owners.

The district "is getting many phone calls from dog owners anxious to see this finally happen," Hayduk said.

I share your joy at a dog park in Simi Valley, however without lights the park will close at dusk -- 5pm in the winter. I would urge all dog owners to attended park & rec board meetings (the next is May 1 @ 6:30pm) which are usually the 1st & 3rd Thursday at 1692 Sycamore (between LA & Royal) and voice your views or just show support for any speakers who share yours. Or call them at 584-4400 or e mail at the web site www.rsrpd.org
