CHP will check car seat installations at event

Motorists who want to make sure their children's car seats are properly installed can have them checked this weekend by the California Highway Patrol.

CHP technicians will offer tips and assistance with securing car seats from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Babies "R" Us at 2340 N. Rose Ave., Oxnard, the CHP announced.

Installing car seats correctly is often a complicated ordeal, and most car seats the CHP checks are being used incorrectly, Officer Mike Untalan said.

"Misuse rates are upwards of 97 percent," Untalan said. "It's extremely complicated, and people just make assumptions, and they just can't do that when it comes to child safety."
