HGTV is building its first "green home" and giving it away to the winner of a national sweepstakes that will begin this weekend.
The home will be in Tradition Hilton Head, a 5,300-acre master-planned community near the popular beach resort of Hilton Head, S.C.
HGTV will give the home away to the winner in a national sweepstakes that kicks off this weekend via the HGTV "Green Home 2008" special hosted by handyman (and Nautica model) Carter Oosterhouse.
The "Green Home" special will air at 9 p.m. Sunday on HGTV.
The HGTV Green Home Giveaway, with a total prize value of approximately $850,000, is being held in addition to the network's popular HGTV Dream Home Giveaway.
The HGTV Green Home is a traditionally styled, low-country cottage now under construction. At just over 2,000 square feet, the fully furnished home includes three bedrooms and two and a half baths and features both construction and design elements that are known to contribute to a healthier living environment.
When completed, the HGTV Green Home will have achieved a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.
LEED for Homes, a voluntary rating system, is a project of the U.S. Green Building Council, which plans to launch a nationwide residential LEED certification program later this year.
