Teachers Have Fun Learning How To Teach Science
Elementary school teachers from around Ventura County attended a hands-on science teaching workshop called "Web of Life & Sensational Seeds" on March 6th. The workshop was sponsored by the Discovery Center for Science & Technology and supported by a grant from the Boeing Company. Dr. David Crowther of the University of Nevada, Reno led the 55 teachers through a variety of hands-on activities, including: The Web of Life: Acting the parts of plants and animals; singing the rap song: "There once was a daisy"; throwing a ball of yarn from person to person around the room to see the interdependence of food sources and consumers; and demonstrating how energy passes from prey to predator using cups of popcorn. Sensational Seeds: Using a pile of various kinds of beans to study classification of living things, plant anatomy and plant growth. "We need the next generation of scientists and engineers and we need the rest of society to understand science enough to make sensible decisions at the ballot box and in the grocery store. Helping grade school teachers to enjoy science is the first step." said Dr. Richard Elsley, organizer of the workshop. Among the comments by teachers who attended were: "It was very interactive and had great teaching strategies & ideas." "Inspired me to use & improve my science teaching strategies." "Dr. Crowther was engaging, fun & lively - it makes all the difference." "Awesome instructor!"
