Slain Simi Valley woman is identified
She was a wife, mother; her death not a random act, authorities say
Authorities on Monday identified a woman found dead in her Simi Valley home over the weekend but released few other details about the homicide.
The victim was identified as Josefina Lanuza-Gutierrez, 44, Deputy Medical Examiner Shasta Gainer said.
Simi Valley police issued a statement late Monday saying they had not received any reports of problems at the home in the past year, and the homicide "was not related to any previous or ongoing criminal activity." But they also said the slaying was "not a random act of violence."
Police refused to release any other details about the homicide, such as how the victim was killed and whether a suspect has been identified, saying it could compromise their investigation.
Police Capt. Roy Jones on Monday declined to elaborate on a brief news release his department issued Sunday evening. The release said only that an adult woman was found dead in a home in the 800 block of Moffatt Circle about 7:50 a.m. Sunday, the victim of a homicide.
"This is a very detailed investigation that involves a lot of people to re-create the timeline that led up to this unfortunate event," Jones said. "In order to tie that all together, we need to keep a lot of this information confidential."
An autopsy was conducted Monday to determine the cause of death. Medical examiners said the results wouldn't be ready until today.
Police discovered Lanuza-Gutierrez after someone called 911 at 7:54 a.m. Sunday and said they had found a body.
Lanuza-Gutierrez lived with her husband and three children, said Maria Guadalupe Rodriguez, a friend and neighbor. Other neighbors said a grandfather also lived in the home.
Lanuza-Gutierrez was a good friend and neighbor, said Rodriguez, who met her about three years ago.
When Rodriguez needed help, Lanuza-Gutierrez often lent a hand, sometimes taking Rodriguez's son to school, she said.
"She was a wonderful person," Rodriguez said in Spanish. "We are going through a very painful time."
Lanuza-Gutierrez was a quiet, happy woman, said a stepbrother, Jose Buendia, 24. Buendia lost touch with her about six years ago when their parents separated, but he remembers her fondly.
"Ever since I knew her, she's always been a great mom," Buendia said.
"She was really, really peaceful — that's why I'm so surprised to hear about this," he said. "She never looked for trouble with anybody."
