After a showing in Santa Barbara on Thursday night that packed the 2,000-seat Arlington Theatre, the Christian-themed surf film "Walking on Water" will have a free showing 7 p.m. today at the Majestic Ventura Theater.

The film follows two teen surfers on a familiar trek to breaks around the world. Tyler Hallen, now 17, and Luke Davis, now 15, spent almost a year with filmmaker Bryan Jennings, a former competitive surfer, traveling to Peru, South Africa and Indonesia. The twist in this surf flick is that the trip is part of a Christian ministry based in La Jolla — also called Walking on Water — that uses surfing to evangelize.

While the crew was in Peru, they met with a homegrown group of surfers called "Tablistas para Cristo," or Surfers for Christ.

Jennings has said his idea for this film stems from his own background, when as a 14-year-old aspiring competitive surfer, he was taken to Hawaii by veteran surfer Pete King, who talked about God after the two spent a day in the waves.

Since then Jennings and the Walking on Water Ministry have produced other films including "The Outsiders" in 2002 and "Noah's Arc" last year.

The ministry also sponsors surf camps and travel, using surfers to spread the "good news of Jesus Christ" to places that have not been welcoming to traditional missionaries.

The movie opened in September and has already been shown along the East Coast. In January it had a sold-out showing at Rock Church in San Diego.

At the Ventura Theater showing, three-time world champion surfer Tom Curren, also known for his Christian-themed music, and the band the Noahs will perform at the screening. The theater is at 26 S. Chestnut St.

Along with the film and music, there will also be prizes including a surfboard.

Can a Christian smoke marijuana and waste a life floating around on a surfboard? The surfer lifestyle is not something to be emulated.

I won't apologize for my feeling that surfers are typically derelicts.
