Riptide teams advance in ice hockey playoffs
The Channel Islands 19-and-under Riptide teams advanced in the Southern California Amateur Hockey Association playoffs over the weekend.
The Riptide Bantam team finished 2-1 at the Channel Islands Ice Center to move on to Lakewood to face the Valencia Express on Saturday at 2:15 p.m.
The Riptide defeated the Mariners 11-1, the Junior Gulls 9-1 and lost to the Maple Leafs 8-6. The Riptide team is coached by Kevin Nash.
In the other Bantam Division semifinal, the Maple Leafs will play the Wolves at 4 p.m. Sunday's final will be at 1:15 p.m. at El Segundo.
Scott Paolella's 18-and-under Riptide team finished 2-0-1. Kevin Shields' 18-and-under team was 3-0. Shields' team will play the Bakersfield Dragons on Saturday in Lakewood at 4:15 p.m. Paolella's team will face the Beach City Lightning at 6 p.m. If both teams win, it will be an all-Riptide SCAHA final on Sunday at El Segundo at 7 p.m.
Nash's team was the seventh seed and upset the No. 2 and 3 seeds. The Riptide No. 1 team defeated the Mariners 5-1, Junior Kings 6-3 and the Lightning 4-1. Paolella's team was the fourth seed and defeated the No. 5 and 8 seeds. The Riptide lost to the Wild No. 2 team 4-3 in overtime. The Riptide defeated Wild No. 1 5-4 and the Dragons 4-3.
The 16-and-under team, coached by Bobby Hull Jr., ended the season with a 1-2 playoff record. The Riptide edged the Blackhawks 3-2, but lost to the Wolves 5-3 and Express 5-2.

BASEBALL
Sharks finish unbeaten in Surf City event
The 10-and-under Oxnard Sharks went undefeated, giving up only two runs for the weekend, and outscoring their opponents by the mercy rule in all four games at the Surf City Madness Classic.
Players include Gabe Vargas, Juan Mendez, Ramon Gomez, Mason Harvey, Darius Vines, Jake Constantine, Turner McDonald, Tony Hernandez, Frankie Tostado, Jeremy Herrera and John McGill. The manager is Pat McDonald. Coaches are Ricardo Tostado and Greg Herrera. Sponsors are Gene and Dolores Hernandez.
Rangers win: The Cal Ripken League Rangers have started off the 2008 season with an opening-day 14-4 win over the Angels in Major Division action.
Skylar Smutny went 3 for 3, scoring three runs with three stolen bases. James Cuillard walked twice, stole four bases and scored twice. Angel Acuna singled and scored twice. Wyatt Birg recorded his first Major Division hits with a double and a triple with five RBIs. Joey Gydosh, Chris Westrup and Chris Randolph also recorded their first Major division base hits.
Colton Follett singled and scored the game-ending run. Anthony Torres, Ryan Cardona, and A.J. West each played well on defense. Birg recorded the win by throwing two shutout innings with three strikeouts.
WRESTLING
Balboa's Adams earns state championship
Balboa Wrestling Club's Tyler Adams was the 120-pound Midget Division champion at the Kids Folkstyle State Championships in Fresno on Saturday and Sunday.
Adams was 2-0 with two pins.
Chris Marquez made the top 12 of the Schoolboy 105-pound class. Marquez was 2-2 with a pin. Also competing were Schoolboys' Jam McCray, 105; Victor Varela, 128; Michael Sena, 128; and Chris Torres, 128. Nico Pineda, 75, competed in the Novice Division.
Thousand Oaks High will host a freestyle and Greco-Roman tournament on Saturday.
