Firm to build classic car storage facility
Site is at Camarillo Airport
Classic car owners may soon have a facility in Camarillo where they can store and work on their cars without taking up space in the family garage.
California Classic Storage has signed a lease with the Camarillo Airport for a three-acre parcel at the corner of Willis Avenue and Eubanks Street.
The property formerly housed a derelict building and a visitor park for the Ventura County Probation Agency, which has an office on Eubanks Street.
"I have classic cars and my friends have classic cars," said Scott Dinovitz, a Camarillo resident and the man behind the project. "Our wives don't like us working on cars in the garage so I am trying to provide a lifestyle for guys — and gals — who like to work on cars."
The proposed two-story facility will provide 100 garages capable of storing four cars apiece. Each garage will have a service lift and a storage lift. Car owners will also have the option of creating a personal lounge area and mezzanine level, Dinovitz said.
"There'll be a public lounge area, which can be used for meetings," he said, "and we also hope to hold regular car shows there, too."
He has publicized the project at several area car shows over the past year and said he has received an enthusiastic response.
Christopher Hastert, the deputy director of Camarillo Airport, said the development will improve the airport environment and bring in extra funding.
"It's part of an effort to increase our revenue streams since we need to be financially self-sufficient and the site badly needed a makeover," Hastert said.
The visitors' park, which has been used for weekend visitation between families and those in the probation department's Work Furlough Program, is being moved to the corner of Skyway Drive and Eubanks Street.
"It will be slightly larger than the former park and provide visitor parking," said Lyle McDonald, divisional manager of the Work Furlough Program.
McDonald says the move, expected within 90 days, will have no operational implications and there will continue to be on-site staff supervision.
The developers are leasing the land for the car storage unit for $7,500 a month. At the end of the 40-year lease, the building will become a county-owned structure.
Camarillo is still processing the necessary permits. Ground preparation at the site has begun.
Dinovitz expects the facility to be open for business next March.

Airport = Aviation! And how are these cars related to aviation?

@tom: from the description this business is not located within the airport.
It would be nice to know what the starting prices for a basic storage bay. The only disconnect I see is the folks that can afford the cost typically don't wrench on their own cars. Just a thought...

"Airport=Aviation! And how are these cars related to aviation?"
it's called the internal combustion engine (ICE). It was invented in 1206 and has been used in both forms of transportation since the invention of both respective vehicles.
I think this is excellent not only for the car owners, but the city of Camarillo as well. This group of guys have been meeting at the airport for years and it has been a big tradition around here. it's not uncommon for over 100 cars to show at a gathering.
Congrats Scott!
