Rotary hosting bang-up celebration
This year marks the 38th year the Rotary Club of Simi Valley hosts the annual Fourth of July Festival and Fireworks Extravaganza for the city of Simi Valley.
"This is the one event in which every member of our club participates. It is our special gift to this great community," said Gregg Burt, incoming president of the Rotary Club of Simi Valley.
This year the free event will be held at Rancho Santa Susana Park. Co-sponsored by the city and the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District, this is a safe environment for families, with something for adults and kids.
Proceeds from the event are donated to various nonprofit organizations and community groups that help those in need, such as senior citizens, youths and families. Over the past 37 years, the Rotary Club of Simi Valley has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to various charities.
This year's Fireworks Extravaganza, which starts at 9:20 p.m., will have 30 percent more fireworks. New this year are special 3-D glasses for viewing the show.
The gates will open at 3 p.m., and a lineup of live entertainment will start at 3:30 p.m. The headliner band is the Platinum Groove, performing a mix ranging from disco to oldies to Motown to the Top 40. Other scheduled entertainment includes a demonstration by the Simi Valley Police Department's K-9 unit, a Puma Karate demonstration and a Polynesian dance group. There will also be patriotic music and a flag salute.
The Children's Fun Zone will be packed with inflatables, such as the Jolly Jump and a giant slide, along with a rock-climbing wall and games. Old-fashioned American food favorites, including hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecue and pizza, will be served by local food vendors. Beer and wine stations will be set up throughout the grounds. Drinking responsibly will be enforced, with a drink limit set for those of drinking age.
For those who love to shop, there will be a large variety of craft booths.
Grab a blanket or lawn chair and come out and have some fun. Rancho Santa Susana Park is at 5005 Los Angeles Ave.
