Fire in roof, attic forces family of 8 from home

An accident during a roofing operation caused a fire that displaced a family of eight from its Simi Valley home on Friday, authorities said.

The fire was reported at 11:54 a.m. in a single-story home in the 4100 block of Gertrude Street in Simi Valley.

When firefighters arrived, they found smoke coming from the home's roof and fire in the attic, said Bill Nash, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze mostly to the attic, Nash said. The fire was knocked down within 20 minutes.

No one was injured, but the eight family members who live in the home were not able to return Friday. They found alternative lodging and did not require help from the Red Cross.

Details about the roofing accident that started the fire were not available Friday afternoon, Nash said.

No, unfortunatly our economy is forcing all kinds of people to live together all over the place just to get by. Especially those who got screwed by Countrywide's irresponsible decisions. Some are making decisions like this or loose their homes. It is sad.

lol slkrchk -

Yeah, but you see the difference, "the family DID NOT require assistance from the red cross"......That would NEVER happen in the "nard".

Glad everyone's ok.

keepin_it_real,

Are you so sure? I know several families in Ventura County (including my own) with six or more children and none of us live in Oxnard.

Let me clarify what I mean. It is in response to the other post, that Oxnard only has families of 8. I know of some families of 6 or 8 that are 2 families that are actually living in a very big house just to get by. These are very honest, hard working families that got screwed by a certain type of loan and are just trying to hold on to their homes. And they don't live in Oxnard either. Thank you.

Again, I am so glad nobody got hurt in the fire.
