Russ Briley's wine picks of the month

2005 Amista Morningsong Vineyards Chardonnay, Dry Creek Valley, 91 points from Wine Enthusiast.

Wine Enthusiast: "Strikes a nice balance between heavily oaked and unoaked chards by being aged in older, neutral oak. As a result, the inherently fine quality of the wine shows through with just a touch of smoke and wood. Crisp and minerally, with a flinty, gun-metal taste, the wine's fruit flatters the palate with pineapples, pears and even tropical fruits, especially mango."

About $22, great chardonnay.

2005 Honig Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, 90 points from Wine Spectator.

Winemaker's notes: "Vibrant ripe red fruit aromas, framed by spice, vanilla and tea. Round and supple on the palate, finishing with lengthy, rich cocoa powder tannins. The fruit for this wine comes from both our sustainably farmed vineyard in Rutherford and from local Napa Valley vineyards."

About $40, very good Napa cab.
