Every year, downtown Santa Barbara goes to the dogs. The occasion? The Big Dog Parade, a ruff-and-fluff showdown where dog owners dress up their pets in wild costumes and then parade them down State Street for fun and prizes.

The fur-flying fun has been chronicled in "Unleashed: A Dogumentary," which was written and produced by a team of filmmakers from Santa Barbara and Ventura. The film premiered earlier this year at the Santa Barbara Film Festival and is now available on DVD from Tangent Pictures for $14.99 plus $5 shipping. Visit http://www.unleashed-dogumentary.com for information.

"Unleashed" paints a picture of just how deep the bond can be between owners and their parading pooches. For some owners, their "unique, intense" relationship with their dog began after they rescued the animal from a shelter or dog-napped them from an abusive owner.

"This project was a natural since we were all dog lovers," said Santa Barbara-based producer Lisa Grossman, who worked on "Unleashed" with Jen Ciraldo and Ventura-based film editor Damon Claussen. "We realized the Big Dog Parade presented the perfect opportunity to create a film that would allow us to explore some of the amazing relationships that people have with their dogs."

It's great to see the wonderful connection between man and dog documented in this way. Thanks to the filmakers for this great project.
