The superintendent of the Santa Paula Elementary School District is stepping down after a year on the job, district officials announced today.

Elizabeth DeVita took over as superintendent of the K-8 district in July, replacing Luis Villegas, who resigned at the end of the 2006-07 school year.

DeVita's last official day on the job will be June 30, but she was not in the office today and is expected to remain on leave for the rest of the month. District officials said DeVita's resignation was by mutual agreement.

"We wish her every success in her new endeavors," board President Gary Marshall said. "She has led our district through a very challenging year."

Marshall said the board is reviewing options for replacing DeVita, including a plan to hire one administrator to serve as both superintendent and chief financial officer. The district's former assistant superintendent of business left the district about a month ago.

Before coming to Santa Paula, DeVita was the assistant superintendent of instruction in the Morongo Unified School District for five years.

Villegas, who started at Santa Paula in 2002, took a job as superintendent of Camarillo's Pleasant Valley School District.

Amen! However it's too little too late. The damage has been done. She is the reason why the Santa Paula Home Study Program is no longer available as well as a highly creditable, dedicated long time teacher that ran the program has resigned from the faltering district.

Did Villegas get asked to leave S.P. or just not asked to continue?

Was he well liked in S.P?

Did he do anything innovative?

The one sad part about this is that now the students of SP get to suffer again while the board pays off yet another superintendent.
