Taking his best shot
Chuck Kirman / Star staff Brandon Hagy, posing for a portrait at Westlake Golf Course, is hoping he will draw more interest from Division I colleges after a sensational junior season at Westlake.
Westlake High junior Brandon Hagy had a terrific season, helping the boys' golf team win the Marmonte League and CIF-Southern Section Divisional team titles.
Individually he won the Marmonte League crown and became the first Westlake golfer to reach the CIF Individual finals since 2005.
It all added up to Hagy being named The Star's Boys' Golfer of the Year.
His strong junior season has given Hagy some much needed momentum heading into a very busy summer, one where he will spend the next few months traveling around the country playing in some of the top junior tournaments.
His objective is to open some eyes among college coaches and hopefully end up with a scholarship offer or two at the end.
"My confidence level is high," Hagy said. "This is a big time for me. I am focused on playing my best golf.
"It's going to be busy but I'm mentally and physically prepared to go out and play great. My goal is to play on the PGA Tour, so I know this is the next step toward that goal."
Hagy's maternal grandfather, Bob Blackmore introduced him to the game when he was 9 years old and he's loved it ever since. He eventually got involved with the Ventura County Junior Golf Association. Mark Wipf, the director for the VCJGA, said Hagy is the kind of player and person that college coaches dream about.
"He has strong character traits and is very academic minded," Wipf said. "He works very hard in school (4.36 GPA in honors classes). His actions show that he is a great son and big brother. And this young man can also golf his ball. He is one of the most consistent players I have seen on the VCJGA Tour."
