Oaks Christian School's Nolan Koon will swim off into the sunset as one of the best this area has ever seen.

Koon repeated as The Ventura County Star Boys' Swimmer of the Year.

It was the same old song, but with a very fast beat.

Koon and the Lions wrapped up back-to-back CIF Southern Section Division III championships. As a freshman and sophomore, Koon celebrated Division IV championships.

"We finished on a really high note," said Koon. "Winning four CIF titles is a highlight of my high school career."

Koon swam the anchor leg of the record-setting 200-yard individual medley relay in the season-ending CIF Masters Meet, which brings together the best swimmers from four divisions. The Lions turned a time of 1 minute, 33.66 seconds.

The UC Berkeley-bound Koon was the Masters champion in the 200 IM with a time of 1:50.71.

Koon and the Lions were coming a record-shattering experience in the Long Beach Belmont Plaza Pool.

Koon was the CIF Division III champion in the 200 IM (1:50.06) and won the 100 breast stroke in 56.25.

Koon and teammate Kevin Nielsen each won two CIF individual titles for the second straight year. Nielsen was a champion in the 200 freestyle (1:40.82) and 100 butterfly (49.53).

Nielsen was The Star's Swimmer of the Year as a sophomore.

The duo will be competing together in college.

"It's going to be cool going there and knowing someone who I have been good friends over the years," said Koon.

Oaks Christian coach Dave Moore said Koon was so talented he could have had an automatic time in every CIF event. One day in practice, Koon did just that — swimming in all the individual events he posted automatic times.

After a stellar junior year, Koon worked just as hard to put the finishing touches to a season highlighted by tremendous team accomplishment.

"He's our best swimmer," said Moore. "Nobody can beat him, except Nielsen can in the 100 butterfly."

The two swimmers have pushed each other over the past four years.

After last season, Koon left Conejo Simi Aquatics to swim for Canyon Aquatics in Santa Clarita.

"I just wasn't happy there (at CSA) and I felt I would be happier with Canyon," he said.

Koon had Emily Bibb, the former La Reina High standout and two-time Star Girls' Swimmer of the Year, to push him in CSA practices as a freshman, sophomore and junior. Bibb went on to UCLA.

Westlake's Aislinn Smalling, this season's outstanding girls' swimmer, and Koon have known each other since their younger days club swimming for CSA.

Koon started his summer season by competing in the prestigious Janet Evans Invitational in Los Angeles.

Koon has Olympic trials aspirations, but will also settle for competing in this summer's Junior Nationals in Minnesota.

Nielsen's dad, Eric, said he expects the two young men will have far greater accomplishments in college. Koon said he has no idea what will become his major, but he's open.

"History, science, English and physics," he said are among favorite subjects.

Koon's sister, Kelsey, will return to Oaks Christian for her sophomore year of swimming. Piper Koon, 19, was a swimmer at Westlake High and she's attending college in Santa Monica.

Oaks Christian loses Michael Craft, a 50-yard freestyle star, but Collin Baratte returns for his senior year and Chase Bloch will be a junior. Bloch swims the 500 freestyle and Baratte the 100 backstroke.

Koon, Nielsen, Craft, Baratte and Bloch were all impact swimmers this past season.
