Peterlin nets two goals as Fusion defeats Fuego, 4-1
Anton Peterlin had two goals and an assist and goalkeeper Logan Frank made some spectacular saves despite playing with a concussion to lead the Ventura County Fusion to a 4-1 win over the host Fresno Fuego on Saturday night.
A day after beating San Jose 1-0 at Newbury Park High, the Fusion battled through 100-degree heat to beat the top team in the Southwest Division of the USSL Premier Development League.
The Fusion (5-3-2) has a chance to finish the season atop the league. It trails the Fuego (7-4-2) by six points, but has a game in hand.
Peterlin got the Fusion off on the right foot, redirecting a corner kick from Michael Farfan for a 1-0 lead at the 12th minute. Peterlin scored in the 50th minute, with the assist coming from Billon Barna. After Fresno's Pablo Campa cut the lead to 2-1 in the 60th minute, Rodrigo Lopez took a through ball from Peterlin and deposited it into the net in the 75th minute. Farfan finished the scoring, thanks to a lead pass from Lopez in the 80th minute.
Frank suffered a concussion in the 35th minute when he hit his head on the goal post, but with the Fusion without a backup goalie, he continued to play.
"It was the greatest Fusion performance to date," said head coach Graham Jones, who also noted a 5-3-2 defensive alignment helped keep the Fuego in check.
The Fusion will face Lancaster next Saturday at Buena High at 7:30 p.m.
