The first issue of the renamed Journal of Ventura County History was released this month. Published as The Quarterly for 53 years, the publication is entering a new era as it becomes a joint venture of the Museum of Ventura County and Moorpark College.

The new editor is Ventura County native Patty Colman, assistant professor of history at Moorpark College, where plans are being made to transform the journal's publication process into an educational opportunity for a new generation of historians.

History 80, an internship course offered at the college, will eventually involve Colman's students in research, editing and design of future issues.

The premiere issue of the Journal of Ventura County History, authored by historian Cherie Brant, explores bird's-eye view lithographs of Ventura in the 19th century. Colman worked closely with the author, student assistants and graphic artist Stephanie Ferguson to produce the first issue.

The next issue will address Simi Valley history.

"I'm eager to increase community involvement with the journal, especially in the eastern portion of the county, and look forward to hosting programs, lectures and exhibits at Moorpark College in conjunction with the museum," said Colman, who was raised in Ojai. She has been teaching at Moorpark for four years.

Museum librarian Charles Johnson, who has edited the publication since 1990, will be involved as chairman of a committee of museum and college representatives who will oversee the publication.

A subscription to the twice-yearly journal is one of the benefits included in a museum membership. Additional copies, at $12 each, are available through the museum's store at 653-0323, ext. 24, although quantities are limited.
