The Phoenix School Graduation was held at the new Ventura County Office of Education building on June 11, 2008. The event was an elegant black and white gala decorated with black vases and white flowers, a black backdrop with white bows, and white rose petals strewn across the stage. This year we had over 250 people in attendance including the following special guests: Dr. Charles Weis, Ventura County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Cary Dritz, Associate Superintendent of Schools, John Gahan, Executive Director, Special Education, Mary Ellen Collins, Director, United Parents, Steve Sherry, Clinical Administrator, Ventura County Behavioral health.
All students in attendance and the high school graduates received an award for their accomplishment during the 07-08 school years. A few students gave speeches that expressed their thankfulness to the staff at Phoenix and provided encouraging words for their peers. One of the speeches was from Kyle Hugues, who was recently spotlighted in the Focus on Education section of the Ventura County Star. This year we had six high school graduates: Kyle Hugues, Ariel Perper, Baylee Parker-Huggins, Jeremy Sears, Kayla Sitton, and Dan Borelli. Seeing the students in their caps and gowns was an emotionally moving experience for staff who has worked with the students for many years. The parents had bright smiles and tears in their eyes as they watched their child move across the stage each reminiscing the hardships and accomplishments their child endured in order to succeed. All of the graduates plan to attend college, work in the community, and start professional careers. These students have made improvements academically, behaviorally, and socially during their time at Phoenix School. Phoenix School operates as a collaboration between Ventura County Office of Education and Ventura County Behavioral Health.
