McCain likes libraries' plan, but Obama yet to agree

Reagan, Johnson officials await word on joint invitation

Sen. John McCain accepted an invitation Friday to participate next month in town hall-style meetings at Simi Valley's Reagan Library and at the Johnson Library in Texas.

While Sen. Barack Obama's campaign did not comment on the joint invitation, Obama on Friday did reject McCain's earlier proposal to participate in 10 joint town hall appearances.

It is unclear if the Obama campaign considered the presidential libraries' invitations among the town hall meetings. Multiple calls to Obama's campaign were not returned.

"We're in a holding pattern until we hear one way or another," said Joanne Drake, chief of staff for the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum.

She said she contacted the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library in Austin, and they hadn't heard anything from the Obama campaign, either.

"We hope that Barack Obama will join us for these important events at these historic venues," Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager, said in a statement.

This week Obama told reporters that it's not realistic to have 10 town hall gatherings with all the other campaigning he needs to do after recently edging Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

McCain, who been the Republican's presumptive candidate for months, has been holding weekly town hall-style meetings on his own. If Obama does not accept the invitation, it's unclear if McCain will participate alone at the Reagan Library.

"We just haven't gotten that far," Drake said.

McCain made the request for the joint town halls the day after it was clear Obama would be the Democratic nominee. He asked Obama to have a town hall meeting once a week until the Democratic convention.

On Friday, Obama's campaign manager, David Plouffe, said Obama offered to meet McCain in five joint appearances between now and the Nov. 4 election — one town hall meeting, plus three traditional debates, and an in-depth debate on foreign policy.

McCain's campaign did not accept Obama's proposal.

Mike Osborn, chair of the Ventura County Republican Central Committee, said he thinks the town hall-style meeting is a good way to hear what his party's candidate has to say. "It's unfortunate if Obama doesn't feel comfortable in these situations," Osborn said.

If the joint town hall meetings are held, an independent polling organization would be brought in to make sure audiences represent a cross-section of the American people, Reagan Library officials said. Candidates would be given equal access to address key issues through audience questions.

Latest report says McCain needs to be courting the hispanic vote. Did not read anything that says B Hussein Obama needs to be courting the white vote. Maybe Obama thinks every white person is is like his white grand mother who Obama says"thinks like a typical white person"

You are correct Mickey. Without a script, Obama will fail in the debates.
Having said that, we are screwed no matter who wins.

BO needs a teleprompter and 20 advisers before he opens his mouth due to the number of special interests that make up his base. BO will stutter, contradict, and hem/haw his way through the townhall format, while the "in the tank" media crown him the greatest orator since Abe.

You guys are delusional if you think that any candidate is unscripted.
