Auction of Joe's Garage puts spotlight on car culture

A historic collection of Californian automotive treasures will cross the block today as RM Auctions proudly presents the esteemed collection of the late Joe MacPherson

A motoring industry icon, MacPherson was a passionate car enthusiast who spent his life devoted to buying, selling and restoring collectible automobiles. His beloved Joe's Garage — a private automotive museum and banquet facility in Tustin — served as a timely memorial to his passion and the southern California car culture.

Viewing of auction lots will begin at 9 a.m. to day and continue through 6 p.m. The auction will begin at 3 p.m. and should conclude around 8 p.m.

Admission to the event requires the purchase of an official auction catalog available for $80. The catalog admits two and must be presented at the entrance to the sale to be granted entry.

"For California hot rodders and Orange County natives, the name Joe MacPherson is instantly recognizable," said Ian Kelleher, managing director of RM Auctions. "As the founder of numerous auto dealerships and a distinguished philantrophist, Mr. MacPherson was as much an astute businessman as he was an active member of his community.

"In addition, Mr. MacPherson was also a passionate collector, acquiring an impressive collection of historic, sports, racing and custom motor cars, over his lifetime all of which were proudly displayed at his famed Joe's Garage."

Following MacPherson's passing in 2007 and the subsequent closure of Joe's Garage earlier this year, RM Auctions is delighted to offer the renowned MacPherson Collection at auction. The single-day event will present approximately 50 historic motor cars for sale, in addition to selected memorabilia and a selection of 25 outstanding motorcycles.

"The MacPherson Collection event will present a range of exclusive ownership opportunities for discerning collectors particularly those with an affinity for vintage performance cars," said Kelleher. "All items represent the best of the very best' in their respective genres of automotive history and will be offered without reserve."

Highlights of the collection include the record-holding 1954 Chrisman Ford Bonneville Coupe, built by the famous Chrisman brothers; a 1957 McCluskey Sprint Car "Tamale Wagon", which won over 120 races and four California Racing Association championships; and a 1966 Gurney Eagle Indy Car, which is considered amongst the most beautiful and inspiring of all Gurney Eagles ever built.

An additional highlight of the auction line-up is one of the most important Miller racing cars in existence, the supercharged 1923 Miller 122. Badged number 2, this example was driven by such racing greats as Eddie Hearne, Ira Vail, Earl Cooper and Bill Albertson. Following its retirement for racing and a subsequent full restoration, this magnificent example was awarded Best in Class' at the 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Cost to bid on the lots is $150 and includes an official auction catalog and admission for two to the previews, auction and reception. Requirements include a valid driver's license and a credit card or $2,000 cash. A bank letter of guarantee is required should you choose to pay for any purchases with a personal or company cheque.

Joe's Garage is at 36 Auto Center Drive in Tustin.
