Ventura County Civic Alliance receives Compass Award

The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) recently held their 2nd Annual Compass Blueprint Recognition Awards at the historic Mission Inn in downtown Riverside. Among the 17 award recipients was the Compact for a Sustainable Ventura County, a partnership of the Ventura County Civic Alliance and the Ventura Council of Governments (VCOG).

Winners of SCAG's Compass Blueprint Recognition Awards are showcased to a regional audience. Award winning projects exemplify the Compass Principles of mobility, livability, prosperity, and sustainability. The Compact for a Sustainable Ventura County received an award in the category of Sustainability.

Local VCCA members Mary Ann Krause of Santa Paula and Dao Doan of Mainstreet Architects + Planners, Inc. accepted the award on behalf of the Civic Alliance. Debra Varnado, associate director, accepted the award on behalf of VCOG.

The effort yielded consensus towards shared goals such as an effective multimodal transportation system; a sustainable and healthy agricultural industry; affordable housing for all residents; protected open space and energy conservation; a diversified economy; and continued education about sustainability and challenges to the region.

In 2006 Ventura County was selected to participate in the SCAG Compass Blueprint project. SCAG contracted with Fregonese Calthorpe Associates of Oregon and Solimar Research Group of Ventura to work with the Civic Alliance and VCOG on creating A Compact for a Sustainable Ventura County. In June of 2007 The Compact Working Group hosted a workshop at California State University Channel Islands where community members were invited to share their vision for the countys future.

The workshop was a chance for community members to express their thoughts of what theyd like to see and to express concerns of what they believe may happen in the countys future. The workshop engaged community members to develop a set of possible scenarios for the future of the county based on alternative land-use, housing, transportation and economic development patterns and policies.

The Ventura Council of Governments (VCOG) is a voluntary joint powers authority representing the 10 cities of Ventura County as well as the County. VCOG's goal is to facilitate cooperative subregional and regional planning, coordination and technical assistance on issues of mutual concern. Visit www.venturacog.org for more information.

The Ventura County Civic Alliance, an initiative of the Ventura County Community Foundation, is a volunteer organization dedicated to promoting the quality of life in the county, primarily through engaging citizens in dialog on regional concerns and by educational endeavors. The organization is guided by a mission to promote a healthy and sustainable future for Ventura County through a balance of economic, social equity and environmental perspectives.
