Greetings from the U.S. Open: June 13
SAN DIEGO — Thousand of golf fans turned out to cheer both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson during Thursday's first round of the U.S. Open. The same fans were not nearly as courteous to all of us in the media who decided to walk inside the ropes with golf's superstars.
As golf writers, we understand fans stake out spots with the hope of getting a good view of the action. As such, when we do stop in front of folks, we try to sit or kneel down so they can still catch the action.
But that didn't seem to appease the multitudes at Torrey Pines, who consistently hurled insults at us, which included being called hacks and some other names that I can't repeat in a family newspaper. None of us were quite sure why a group of people who were getting a chance to spend the day enjoying great golf and beautiful weather were so negative and upset.
With Woods and Mickelson paired together again today, most of us will be out following them again. So if you're coming out today or over the weekend, try to be nice. Remember, golf is a gentleman's game.
