Afghanistan will be subject of a lecture

Nancy Gallagher, chair of Middle East Studies at UC Santa Barbara, will discuss Afghanistan in a free lecture at the Grant Brimhall Library in Thousand Oaks June 25.

The lecture, Stories from Afghanistan, is sponsored by Global Exchange Ventura County Supporters from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the library, 1401 E. Janss Road.

Gallagher, who lives in Newbury Park, recently went to Afghanistan on a Global Exchange Reality Tour, Women Making Change. The delegation of five women spoke with Afghan women in nongovernmental organizations, met with human rights activists and celebrated International Women's Day with the Ministry of Women's Affairs.

This program is the first in a series on Afghanistan, Iran and Kurdistan. In July, Nayereh Tohidi, chair of the Gender and Women's Studies Department at CSU Northridge, will speak on Iran and Her Neighbors. In August, Afghan filmmaker Meena Nanji will show and discuss her documentary about women in Afghanistan, "View From a Grain of Sand." In September, photojournalist, author and filmmaker Kevin McKiernan will speak about his experiences in Kurdistan.
