Fusion women seeking first win

Having seen its male counterparts turn around its season with a pair of home wins, the Ventura County Fusion women's soccer team returns to Buena High tonight in search of the first W-League win in franchise history.

The Fusion women (0-3-1) kick off their second of three home doubleheaders with the Fusion men against the winless Los Angeles Legends at Buena High tonight at 5.

The Legends (0-4-1) have scored just one goal and are coming off back-to-back losses at altitude in Colorado during the week, losing 3-0 at Fort Collins and 1-0 at Real Colorado.

"We're hoping that affects them," said Fusion coach Michelle Myers.

The Fusion looked strong in a 3-1 loss at Western Conference-leading Pali Blues on Saturday. Without central defenders Kasey Moore and Kasey Johnson tonight, the Fusion will have to make an adjustment at the back.

"The nice thing about that is it gives us a chance to look at some other players," said Myers. "We're counting on (Pepperdine's) Ashley Copp to step back into that center back role."

Former Ventura High and Ventura College star Alie Avina is also in line to step into the lineup.

Moore has been recalled by the U.S. Under-23 women's national team, which faces the Fusion in a friendly Monday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson. The University of Texas star is only expected to miss one match.

The Fusion will be boosted by the debut of USC attacker Megan Ohai.

"That will be a huge help," said Myers. "She should give us an offensive punch, either up front or center midfield."

The Fusion's three goals thus far have been assisted by tireless forward Emily Wynne.

"Emily's been having a great season," said Myers.

The Fusion men (2-2-2) are back to .500 after sweeping two matches at Buena High last week. Currently in sixth place in the Southwestern Division, the Fusion could climb within three points of leaders San Francisco and Fresno.

Although that will be a tough task, as the Legends (3-0-2), which feature size up front and at the back, are undefeated and have only conceded one goal in five matches.

"They're strong through the middle," said coach Graham Smith.

The Fusion may be missing as many as six players through injury, including defenders Greg Folk, Lee Stephens and Armondo Guerrero

"It gives everybody a chance," said Smith. "Normally out of adversity you get someone who comes through and seizes his opportunity."

Newcomer Artur Aghasyan, who scored on his debut May 30 and also played well two days later, fits that mold.

"He's shown good movement up front," said Smith. "He's been very fresh and shown a willingness to performer. And it's the same with (winger) Brian Byrne."

The Fusion also got good news from Florida this week, as Jean Alexandre made the Haitian national team for the upcoming World Cup qualification campaign. Smith said Alexandre will not return to the Fusion until late in the month.
