'Inside the NFL' moves from HBO to Showtime

HBO doesn't make too many mistakes, but when it did make one, it didn't take long for Showtime to take advantage of it.

"Inside the NFL," which was canceled after a 30-year run on HBO, has been picked up by Showtime. CBS Sports will produce the program along with NFL Films. Showtime is owned by CBS Corp.

The show will air each Wednesday throughout the season starting Sept. 10. The hosts for "Inside the NFL" will be announced soon, CBS said. There figure to be significant changes in the talent lineup since previous host Bob Costas and analyst Cris Collinsworth are with NBC and Cris Carter has moved to ESPN.

Did you see that? Ratings for last Saturday's EliteXC mixed martial arts show on CBS earned a 3.0 rating and a 6 percent share of the audience, according to Sports Business Daily.

The Los Angeles market, which includes Ventura County, did even better than that. KCBS (Channel 2) had a 7.2 rating and a 17 share for the last 15 minutes of the telecast, which featured the main event between Kimbo Slice and James Thompson. That made KCBS the No. 9 market in the nation for that period. Channel 2 had a reported 4.7 rating and 9 share for the entire telecast.

The show, however, drew criticism for the level of competition and for the lack of real action shown by the time the main event came on at a very late hour.

Meanwhile, Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals Monday night that went into triple overtime before Pittsburgh finally beat Detroit 4-3, earned a healthy 3.8 overnight rating with a 7 share.

That's the best Stanley Cup Finals rating NBC has had since it started showing them in 2006 and it's the best Game 5 Finals rating since 2002's 4.2/8 for Carolina-Detroit. It was a full 111 percent better than last year's Game 5 between Anaheim and Ottawa, which drew a 1.8/3.

Saturday's Game 4 rating was 2.3/5, giving it the top prime-time rating for the night.

Other notes: NASCAR shifts from Fox to TNT for six weeks starting with Sunday's Pocono 500 at 11 a.m. Prerace coverage begins at 9:30. Fox's NASCAR ratings went up for the first time since 2005. The network averaged a 5.7 rating with a 12 share, up 2 percent from last year's 5.6/13. The Belmont Stakes will be on ABC at 2 p.m. (post time 3:25) with Big Brown looking to become the first Triple Crown winner since 1978.

FSN Prime Ticket will debut a new edition of "In My Own Words" featuring Nomar Garciaparra of the Dodgers following tonight's Dodgers-Cubs game at approximately 11. At 9:30 p.m. Thursday, FSN West will premiere another "IMOW" on new Los Angeles Sparks player Candace Parker. ... Time Warner Cable will show the Ventura County All-Star Football Game at 10 p.m. Saturday and at 5 and 8 p.m. Sunday on Channel 36. The games will also be available on Time Warner's digital on-demand service for 30 days starting next week.
