Torrey Pines offering golfers unique challenge

Golfers who wonder what they would shoot under U.S. Open conditions can find out following next week's 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.

As a way to raise money for San Diego Junior Golf and Pro Kids, Torrey Pines is offering golfers the chance to play the course under Open conditions on Tuesday, June 17, two days after the final round.

There will he shotgun starts at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Cost is $1,500 per player and includes a U.S. Open tee gift package and food and beverage.

Prizes will be awarded to top scores.

Hole-in-one report: Ray Janik of Ventura scored his first career hole in one on the 126-yard 11th hole at Buenaventura Golf Course. Janik used a 9-iron and his shot was witnessed by John Sharp and Richard Benson.

Janik, 66, said he saw his ball bounce on the green about 4 feet from the flag and then roll into the hole.

Hugh Holbert, a member at Saticoy Country Club, aced the 130-yard 10th hole at Saticoy with a pitching wedge. His shot was witnessed by Paul Smith, Gary Pew and Bob England.

Rare bird: A double eagle is one of the rarest feats in golf, but within the last few weeks there have been two in the county.

Richard Nagelschmidt of Santa Paula scored a double eagle on the 490-yard, par-5 fourth hole at Sterling Hills. Nagelschmidt knocked his 4-iron shot into the hole for a 2.

Alex Rangel of Oxnard accomplished the same feat on Camarillo Springs' 464-yard fourth hole. Rangel knocked his 3-iron shot from 215 yards into the cup for his double eagle. It was witnessed by Manuel Cervantes.

U.S. Open fantasy: TeeClub.com is offering a Golf Fantasy Challenge contest for the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla. Participants pick a team of five players and compete against other teams in the competition. Winners earn great prizes.

Demo Day: River Ridge will host its annual Pre-Father's Day Demo Day on Saturday from 9 a.m to 2 p.m. Eleven vendors will provide free fittings with their latest lines and customers will have their custom-fitted clubs within 10 working days. Attending are Bridgestone, Callaway, Cleveland, Cobra, Mizuno, Ping, Power Bilt, Srixon, Titleist and U.S. Kids.

Bridgestone will also teach golfers which ball is the best fit for your game. Srixon will give out two-ball promotional packs. Lee Martin will hold a clinic at 9:30 a.m. and Larry Centeno will give a short-game talk at 11.

Kohut wins: Santa Paula resident J.T. Kohut won the Pepsi Tour event held last week at Stallion Mountain Golf Club in Las Vegas.

The former UCLA standout fired rounds of 72-67-70 to finish at 209. Oxnard resident Jon Ramirez finished two strokes behind Kohut after rounds of 68-73-70 for a 211 total.
