Oxnard motorcyclist dies following collision
The Oxnard Union High School District was shocked today by the news that one of its well-liked employees died after a car crashed into his motorcycle this weekend.
Noah Terrazas, 31, was riding his motorcycle southbound on Pacific Coast Highway near Hobson State Beach about 4:29 p.m. Sunday when Paul Brzonkala, 43, of Los Angeles attempted to make a left turn from a northbound lane into an open camping space and struck Terrazas’ motorcycle head on, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Terrazas was thrown about 10 feet from his bike and suffered major head trauma. He was wearing a helmet, but it was not certified by the Department of Transportation, the CHP reported.
Terrazas was flown to the Ventura County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead in the intensive care unit at 10:55 p.m., said Armando Chavez, a senior deputy medical examiner. An autopsy determined he died from blunt force head injuries.
Brzonkala, who was driving a sport utility vehicle suffered minor abrasions on his arm from his airbag.
The collision remained under investigation on Monday.
News of Terrazas’ death hit hard at Pacifica High School in Oxnard, where he was hired as a groundskeeper when the school opened in 2001, said Will Cowen, athletic director and head basketball coach at Pacifica.
“Everyone’s just shocked and devastated,” Cowen said.
Terrazas worked at Pacifica – where his mother is registrar – for two years before being promoted to the Oxnard Union High School District’s office.
He was known a warm, outgoing man with a quick sense of humor who went out of his way to show concern for those around him, Cowen said.
After being promoted, Terrazas worked as a deliveryman, said Denise Barnett, director of human resources for the Oxnard Union High School District.
“He’s known throughout the district as a very hard worker, and we will miss him, both professionally and personally,” Barnett said. “There are a lot of sad faces around here today.”

I do not know the details of this accident, but it seems that there has been a lot of motorcycle accidents in the news lately. Not to be insensitive to this accident, but I see a lot of crazy speed racers darting in and out of traffic all the time.

No one said that he was "racing around on his bike". From the way it sounds, if he was hit head on, is that the guy turning left is at fault here? I'm not sure. Yes, there has been ALOT of motorcycle accidents lately in the area. Has alot to do with summer coming, nice weather, and crowded streets. Not everyone that rides a bike "races around". My husband is an avid bike rider and with his over 20 years experience in riding, accidents happen. He was involved in a solo crash last year, didnt get hurt too bad, however, you never know. There was a small patch of sand in the street as he was turning a corner - dropped his bike right there. Thank god he was in full gear, only broke his shoulder - but hit head first, helmet probably saved his life. Please if you ride, look out for cars, if you're driving, look out for riders. My thoughts are with this mans family - You just never know when your time is up. Rest in peace rider.

Cruising on your motorcycle could be considered as American as apple pie. There is a lot of people that are responsible and take in much enjoyment in the thier bikes, but I am talking about the idiots that drive 50 mph in a residental and those loud a** bikes you can hear from two miles away.

Loud bikes are a good idea I think, it lets people know that you are near. Even though they can be annoying it makes your presence known.

Noah was extremely well liked by his many friends and co-workers at Oxnard Union High School District where he was one of our best employees. He was a real “go-to” guy with a million dollar smile who will be greatly missed. Hard to believe he’s gone.

My condolences go to Teresa, Wife and New Baby and family and friends. Noah and I go way back and it is hard to hear about a young person’s life being cut short. Traffic hazards happen and it is not about who is to blame it is about family and friends grieving. If you post a comment please think before you post. R.I.P NOAH…………. :o(

In 2001, Noah was one of the first people I met when I was hired to work at Pacifica High School. He had an infectious smile and one of the greatest personalities on our campus. Noah was a reliable and enthusiastic employee, but most important, a quality person who loves his family!
On behalf of the entire athletic department, at Pacifica, our thoughts and prayers are with Noah's entire family in this very dificult time.
I would encourage everyone reading this tragic story to remember that Noah's family expands far beyond his relatives and friends to our entire school district! There will be numerous people reading these threads who care deeply about this man and his family. I am sure that there will be ample forums available, in the future, for us to discuss our philosophy on traffic laws, helmets, and speed racing! For the time being please honor this man's life and legacy with the dignity that he so much deserves.

My condolences to the family. I've had a few of my friends never return from a ride.
For the past 25 years, I've had a motorcycle. Subsequently, I've also had my share of mishaps. The most dreaded of these is the errant driver making a left-hand-turn (in my case, a cop in his patrol car when I was 20. Yes, I was lucky!).
Although there are individuals in our motorcycling brotherhood that give us a bad name (the 1%'s and squids), the majority of riders command respect - whether it's a Harley or a sport bike. We're doing our part to alleviate traffic congestion and conserve fuel while enjoying a passion that's been in our blood since youth.
Please car drivers, give us a break and keep your attention on the road - not your cell phone. As for my brothers, it's ATGATT! (All the gear all the time)

This is a sad story. That road is not very safe at that time in the afternoon with the sun in your eyes etc. I feel for Noah's family but what about the poor driver of the SUV? I couldn't imagine hitting and killing someone like that. That is a terrible feeling he will have for the rest of his life. Will any charges be brought against him? Will Noah's family persue any sort of charges for his death? I would think they will but who knows....

This is unbelievably sad.
I don't know the details of the accident.
But I will say is that I can't wait for that cell phone while driving ticket to start in July. To me, there is nothing worse than some arrogant yuppy idiot driving a 3 ton SUV 40 in a 65, swerving and weaving while talkig on a cell phone or texting without even looking at the road or where they need to turn for that matter....
I ride (very safely to save on gas, which I can't afford anymore) and that is always my biggest fear.
Cops, please write lot's of those tickets this summer.

First, my condolences to the family.
Second, as soon as I started my family, safety took priority and my fun, dangerous, hobbies such as racing and motorbikes went out the window.
I love the feeling of speed and the open road, but the thought of leaving a fatherless child behind makes me discard the thought of riding or racing again.

I was at the scene after it happened. It looked like the guy driving the SUV just made a mistake and turned left in front of the on coming bike. The road is crowded and it looked like the rider had no where to go.
Tough deal for everyone. The driver of the car looked shaken and I felt bad for him. It was just a bad mistake.
As for the helmet, who is to know if a better helmet would have saved him? One this we know is it will not, but if I were ridding I would not settle for anything else but the best. The cost of the best and the worst has to be pretty close and not worth sacrificing comfort or style. If there is any salvation it is good to know he was riding along the beach laying back and he must have been happy. We should all wish for as much when out time comes.

In response to comment from : SayItLikeItIs
First of all, just because someone decides to ride a motorcycle at any stage in their live does not mean that they love their families any less. The risk of death is there for everyone. The choice to ride doesn’t give you a fast pass to death. Accidents happen to everybody. People get into car accidents, motorcycle accidents, work related accidents, murdered, afflicted with deadly illnesses, etc. No one ever chooses to leave this Earth faster than anyone else.
If it was your choice to not ride, that’s fine but don’t think that your life can’t be taken in a different manner. Whatever your choices are in life, I hope that you are living your life to the fullest doing whatever makes you happy because no one is guaranteed tomorrow.

I feel the same way SayItLikeItIs, but some people choose to live there lives this way, something I have never understood, after falling in love and having a child. I went out with a guy that had a bike, it was the hardest thing for me to ride on the back....but when I was younger, unmarried no kids, I rode all the time, it was a blast. Life means more to me now that I have created one.
I would have guilt everytime I rode, afraid of leaving my son without a parent, his father is not in the picture. Not to mention what it would do to him, he told me later, he would worry terribly while I was on my ride. Makes me sick to think about it.

As a motorcyclist of 18yrs., I can tell you that left-hand turns by motorists are the biggest enemy. Why somebody would make a comment about "speed racers" within a thread of the number one killer to cyclist is beyond me. Those of you not familiar with 2 wheels should be aware that it's not easy avoiding those of you that forget to share the road with us. We ride both offensive and defensive to make up for this. My heart goes out to this fellow rider and his family. I think we will find in the follow up that the the driver making an un-protected left hand turn is at fault.

I would never ride with one of those non-DOT approved plastic buckets on my head. I crashed and ruined a top of the line helmet and didn't even get a headache.

I don't know this man, but as a motorcycle rider it always hurts to hear about one being hurt or worse yet killed. Car driver seems to look right thru us, and I am always looking for eye contact when a car is at a cross street as I go thru. Having said that, it is crazy to not ride with the best helmet you can affort. A non DOT approved helmet would indicate one of the skull cap type that provide no protection, and are worn as a style statement only because the law says you have to wear a helmet. Of course the law also says that it must be DOT approved. Head injuries are the least survivable type, and you are adding risk to an otherwise risky sport by wearing anything less than the best. God speed.

Family or no family, he felt safe and secure with his bike. I do not believe this is the time to bring up such things, a family is in mourning at losing a great husband and father and son etc. Please have some respect for the family here. Were not discussing motorcycle safety at this time.

When tomorrow starts without me,
And I'm not there to see;
If the sun should rise and find your eyes
All filled with tears for me;
I wish so much you wouldn't cry
The way you did today,
While thinking of the many things,
We didn't get to say.
I know how much you love me,
As much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me,
I know you'll miss me too;
But when tomorrow starts without me,
Please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name,
And took me by the hand,
And said my place was ready,
In heaven far above,
And that I'd have to leave behind
All those I dearly love.
But as I turned to walk away,
A tear fell from my eye,
For all my life, I'd always thought,
I didn't want to die.
I had so much to live for,
So much yet to do,
It seemed almost impossible,
That I was leaving you.
I thought of all the yesterdays,
The good ones and the bad,
I thought of all the love we shared,
And all the fun we had.
If I could relive yesterday,
Just even for awhile,
I'd say good-bye and kiss you
And maybe see you smile.
But then I fully realized,
That this could never be
For emptiness and memories,
Would take the place of me.
And when I thought of worldly things,
I might miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you, and when I did,
My heart was filled with sorrow.
But when I walked
through heaven's gates,
I felt so much at home.
When God looked down and smiled at me,
From His great golden throne,
He said "This is eternity,
And all I've promised you."
Today for life on earth is past,
But here it starts anew.
I promise no tomorrow,
But today will always last,
And since each day's the same way
There's no longing for the past.
But you have been so faithful,
So trusting and so true.
Though there were times you did some things,
You knew you shouldn't do.
But you have been forgiven
And now at last you're free.
So won't you take my hand
And share my life with me?
So when tomorrow starts without me,
Don't think we're far apart,
For every time you think of me,
I'm right here, in your heart.

Man. Tragic. RIP. My condolences to his friends and family.
A non DOT approved helmet? This tragic outcome from this accident may have been avoided.
I'm going to speculate that he was wearing a "skull cap" or "halfy helmet"; http://images.google.com/images?um=1&...
It's getting warm and sunny. The riders with the shorts, t-shirts, flip flops and halfy helmets are increasing which is why the articles in the paper are increasing.
Any other riders reading this article, PLEASE GEAR UP. As insensitive as it sounds, the mantra goes if you have a hundred dollar brain, get a hundred dollar helmet.

It is very sad to here Noah was killed. My condolences to his parents and his family.
Be careful of thinking DOT approved helmets are going to save your life. The Department of Transportation only approves a helmet will not crack at 35 mph and lower. You can certainly purchase a helmet that is better protection at higher speeds, but no matter how good a helmet you buy it won't prevent internal brain damage or spinal cord damage.
The very best protection for any motorcyclist is to assume the driver of the car never see's you.
Car drivers are not trained to see motorcyclists and too many new motorcyclists do not take the time to become good defensive drivers.
Again, my condolences to the Terrazas.

Posted by hdrider66 on June 3, 2008 at 10:50 a.m. and couldn't have said it better: "The very best protection for any motorcyclist is to assume the driver of the car never sees you.". You really do have to maintain a sense of paranoia because some people are that way due to haste, distraction, or or they are mentally incapacitated.

What a tragic story.
I have ridden bikes in Europe and North America over the last 40 years. I am a better rider now than I was when I was younger but it is frightening to think that I might die as a result of a vehicle turning abruptly across my path.
Statistics show this is the primary cause of death for a motorcyclist and riders should never forget it. There are just too many distractions for cars, but I you are prepared you might be able react quickly enough to avoid a collision. Unfortunately I have to do it all the time.
I avoid riding in groups because I have to check the position of the other bikes before taking evasive action.
I have the deepest sympathy for the family of the young man Noah. Don't forget that the driver of the other vehicle will carry this horrible memory with him forever.
