The Somis gas station illustrated in this Ray Ayers painting no longer exists.

A memorial service for Camarillo artist, Ray Ayers, was held on May 27 at the United Methodist Church. Touching tributes paid homage to Ray's love of his family, quick wit, unrelenting racquetball competitiveness, and willingness to befriend all who came in his path.

Ray Ayers was more than a great husband, father, and friend. He unwittingly became an important historian. Ray's watercolors beautifully document Ventura County's impressive agricultural history as well as the area's other significant structures. Old barns, tractors, farms, the Somis gas station, the Camarillo House, the St. Mary Magdelan Chapel, and the Somis Nut House have all been a focus in Ray's paintings.

How lucky for Camarillo and Somis that this great artist lived among us to highlight the richness in the area. Through Ray Ayer's paintings, the good ole days of simpler times will never be forgotten.
