Two police officers noted for crime deterrent effort

Two Oxnard police officers who helped develop the International Crime Free Association's newest program were recently recognized by the association, the Oxnard Police Department announced.

Cmdr. Tom Chronister was named the 2008 Crime Free Supervisor of the Year, and Detective Martin Ennis was named the Crime Free Officer of the Year for the second year in a row.

Chronister and Ennis developed the department's Crime Free Business program in partnership with research universities and government agencies. Rolled out in December, the program seeks to reduce violence at small businesses by teaching managers and employees how to make their workplaces less appealing targets for criminals.

Composed primarily of law enforcement personnel, the International Crime Free Association is a nonprofit organization that coordinates programs intended to reduce crime and violence.

Chronister and Ennis received their awards last week at the association's 2008 conference in Surrey, British Columbia.
