Who: Kevin Costner.
Age: 53.
Callings: Actor, director, producer and lead singer-guitarist for his band Kevin Costner and Modern West.
Roots: Costner grew up in Ventura County and calls Ventura his hometown.
Notable films: "Dances With Wolves," "Field of Dreams," "Bull Durham," "Tin Cup," "The Untouchables," "No Way Out," "JFK," "Open Range," "A Perfect World," "Thirteen Days," "The Upside of Anger," "Rumor Has It," "Fandango" and "Silverado."
Laurels: Two Oscars, for best director and picture, for "Dances With Wolves" (the film won seven Oscars in all). That movie, along with "Field of Dreams" and "Bull Durham," make various American Film Institute best-of lists.
Of note: Costner repeatedly has said he will never make a sequel to any of his films.
Star genesis: Costner was a business major at CSU Fullerton, but also took acting lessons at the time. He went into marketing, but after accidentally meeting actor Richard Burton on a flight from Mexico and hearing Burton's advice to go for it, Costner quit his job and moved to Hollywood.
Sports: Costner is known to play, especially baseball and golf. Yes, like his Crash Davis character in "Bull Durham," Costner is a switch-hitter. Favorite baseball player? George Brett. He also liked Lou Brock. Favorite golfers? Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino.
As for his golf prowess, Costner said, "My game is so average. I don't like golf the way most people think I do."
Family: He and wife, Christine, have a 1-year-old son, Cayden. They plan to live mostly in their Summerland home and spend some time at their Colorado ranch near Aspen. Costner has three grown children from a previous marriage and a son from a brief 1996 relationship.
