Singer-sax player Mindi Abair reached for the "Stars" on her new CD.

"I'm going for broke, making the record I've always wanted to make with songs that honestly portray my innermost feelings about my own life and the world around me," she said in a press release.

"Stars" is the follow-up to her 2006 CD "Life Less Ordinary," which debuted at the top of Billboard's contemporary jazz chart. Abair, who will perform "Stars" under the stars Saturday as part of the Westlake Jazz Series, said she wanted the new disc to brighten people's lives."While I was writing the songs for Stars,' I felt very optimistic, expressing a lot of joy and hope," she said. "We need that spirit to take hold of us today, and I am excited about expressing these ideas through songs that are meaningful to me and reflective of my journey."

Abair, certainly, has kept her career varied. She's guested on Keb' Mo's award-winning "Peace Back by Popular Demand" CD, toured as a singer and sax player with Adam Sandler, opened for Josh Groban, and performed with Duran Duran and the Backstreet Boys. On the radio, she hosts a weekly syndicated show called "Chill with Mindi Abair" that is broadcast in 40 markets. Each week, she spins music by such cutting-edge acts as Zero 7, Air and Thievery Corporation.

Abair will perform outside at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza, 880 S. Westlake Blvd., Thousand Oaks. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6. Tickets, including dinner and VIP seating, are $115; general admission seating is $47.50. Call 557-1234 or visit http://www.westlakejazzseries.com.

The Westlake Jazz Series will continue with concerts by Richard Elliot and Rick Braun (Aug. 16) and Peter White (Sept. 13).
