Valdez's homers help Port Hueneme win championship
Jesus Valdez belted a pair of two-run homers and reached base four times to lead the Port Hueneme Senior League All-Stars to a 19-7 victory over Buena Park on Tuesday night in the Sub-Division 3 North Tournament championship at Palmdale.
Valdez hit his first homer in the first inning. Jose Hernandez cracked a solo homer in the third. Manuel Perez added a two-run homer in the seventh. Brandon Hernandez had three doubles and a single. Hernandez had four hits and a walk. Valdez had a walk and a single.
Dom Guevara pitched the first three innings. Hernandez pitched the next three innings and Valdez closed the game.
Port Hueneme plays for the Southern California championship on Saturday at Palmdale with a pair of games at 2 and 6 p.m. Port Hueneme is seeking to play in the West Region Tournament, starting July 29 in Upland. The West Region champion advances to the Senior League World Series in Bangor, Maine, Aug. 10-16.
Montalvo to play for title: The Montalvo Little League Juniors will play for the championship in the Sub-Division 3 North Tournament for 13-14-year-old players with a Super Regional appearance on deck for the winner.
Montalvo needs one win to play in Saturday's two-game set at Conejo Creek Park in Thousand Oaks. Today's game features Montalvo against Tuesday's Encino/Murphy Ranch winner. Montalvo opened the tournament by routing Encino, 19-9.
Murphy Ranch took the lead with a run in the bottom of the second on Monday night, but Montalvo plated two runs on Dalton Rocha's two-run single in the top of the third scoring Nathaniel Palace and Corey Dodge. After a scoreless fourth, Montalvo scored in the top of the fifth. Palace walked, moved to second on a passed ball and then scored on an error by the Murphy Ranch shortstop. Murphy Ranch scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game.
In the fifth, Jordon Yanez relieved starter Jeff Schwartz, who gave Montalvo a quality start going 413 innings. Montalvo took a 4-3 lead in the top of sixth when Brett Ramirez led off the inning with single to left, moved to third on Corey Dodge's single and then scored on a passed ball.
Yanez allowed one hit and a walk to earn the win. Allen Colborn pitched out of a one-out bases-loaded jam.
Dodge and Kahlil Pipersburg each had two hits. Phillip Bickford had a hit and made a nice catch on a deep drive to right field. Wesley Dodge, Marcus Sandoval and Tyler Phillips also contributed to the victory. Manager Frank Dodge and coaches Jerry Durham and David Rocha are one win away from moving on to the State Division championship series Saturday at Conejo Creek with games at 1 and 4 p.m. Sunday's game will start at 10 a.m. if needed.
Around the horn: The Dos Pueblos 11-12-year-old Little Leaguers (14-1, 2-0) play tonight in Orange for the North Bracket title against LaVerne American or Tustin Eastern. The winner advances to Murrieta on Saturday for the opening of a best-of-three series to determine the SoCal champion for the West Region Tournament on Aug. 1-10. The Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., will be Aug. 15-26.
The Newbury Park PONY 13-year-old All-Stars lost Monday night to Victoria of Riverside. Newbury Park played Tuesday night in an elimination game after mustering only two hits in a loss.
The Thousand Oaks Little League 9-10 All-Stars were beaten, 19-1, by Tustin Western whom is advancing to the championship game tonight at 5 p.m. at Moorpark in the Sub-Division North Bracket. Moorpark will host the season-ending championship series Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's game starts at 3 p.m. and Sunday's game begins at 11 a.m. If needed a Monday game will be played at 5 p.m.
Thousand Oaks falls: Manhattan Beach defeated the Thousand Oaks 9-10-year-old Little League All-Stars, 14-3, in a Sub-Division 3 North Tournament elimination game at Moorpark.
Thousand Oaks, the District 13 and Section 1 champion, came through the loser's bracket in the last two tournaments and played 16 games in three double-elimination tournaments. Tustin Western, a 19-1 winner over Thousand Oaks on Monday night, plays Manhattan Beach in today's title game at 5:15 p.m.
Today's winner opens play in the championship series final starting Saturday at 3 p.m. at Moorpark.
