July 11, 2008 the Southern California Police Canine Competition was held at Camarillo High School. German Shepards, Belgian Malnois and Westfalen Terriers were among the K-9s in competition.

The Simi Valley Elks arrived with their BBQ wagon, and volunteers, Trustee Paul LiPari, Past Exalted Ruler Mike Johnson, Esquire Heather Johnson, Rhoda Devis. Lloyd Thomas, Mark Clements, Melanie Gadbery, and Dennis and Adelaide Wavra. The fire was lit and cooking began. BBQ tri-tip, chicken, beans, garlic bread and salad was the menu of the day. Even the seagull that flew in and snagged a chicken breast from the hot grill thought the food was great.

The parking lot was full of Police cars, (with engines and AC running to keep the K-9s cool), from as far north as Concord and south as Carlsbad. The K-9 Officers and their Handlers were here on their own time for fun and competition.

The K-9s are imported from European countries where they are trained. The price of each dog is anywhere from $6000 to $9000. These dogs are provided by the generosity of the communities of each department. The K-9s are given classes such as hard surface tracking. This class alone is $4000. The Officers/Handlers are all taught 15 to 20 words in the language the dog is trained to bond and work together. All total, it takes about $30,000 each to have a K-9 Officer on the street.

These K-9s live with their Officer/Handler and their family. They work for about 5 to 8 years before they are retired.

The Simi Valley Elks were proud to BBQ for those who Protect and Serve. Thank you to all the Officers.

Ps: The K-9s were not fed tri-tip or chicken.
