Morning Report: 3 alleged gang members arrested on suspicion of armed robbery

Police and Fire: Three alleged gang members were arrested Tuesday evening on suspicion of dragging a man into an alley and robbing him at gunpoint, police said.

Adrian Morales, 27, Jesus Guerrero, 28, and Daniel Castaneda, 24, were arrested shortly after they allegedly robbed an Oxnard man in an alley behind the El Rio Market at 2765 Vineyard Avenue about 6:40 p.m., Oxnard police said in a prepared statement. All three men are from Oxnard.

The 19-year-old victim just cashed his paycheck at the market when the men confronted him and began asking him questions, police said. They then allegedly grabbed him, took him to the rear of the market, pointed a gun at him and robbed him of his money and cell phone before leaving the scene on foot.

Shortly after the robbery, a Ventura County Sheriff’s deputy heard the report of the crime on her radio and began checking nearby streets, said Capt. Dave Kenney of the Sheriff’s Department.

The deputy soon spotted three men in a sport utility vehicle who matched the descriptions of the suspects and detained them at the intersection of Colonia Avenue and Olive Street.

The victim, whose name was withheld because of the suspects’ alleged gang affiliations, identified Morales, Guerrero and Castaneda as the robbers.

His money and cell phone were recovered at the scene, police said.

All three suspected robbers were booked into Ventura County Jail on suspicion of robbery, kidnapping, conspiracy and participation in a criminal street gang, police said.

----------

Traffic: At 7:05 a.m., the California Highway Patrol was reporting a non-injury traffic collision on Shell Road at Ventura Avenue north of Ventura.

----------

Weather: Mostly sunny conditions are expected today after patchy clouds and fog this morning, the National Weather Service reported.

Forecasters predict high temperatures near 70 at beaches and into the 90s in valleys and local mountains.

Seriously, this is low, to rob the guy at gunpoint and take his belongings...but I'm really glad they didn't shoot the guy and that these idiots were soon caught.

Now, the 19-year old is earning his money the legal and right way as a citizen should, not like these idiots who rob people at gunpoint for a living.

junior-i thought it was just "known" gang members that were not allowed to wear the attire, true fan or not...??? Maybe OPD will chime and and give the correct info.

Posted by oxnard40 on July 23, 2008 at 9:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)

In this area, you won't find Cowboy stuff. El Rio is the capital of Raider Nation.

Posted by hotwildflower on July 23, 2008 at 9:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)

well I was curious because when my son was little he liked the Cowboys and being the open minded parents that we are, we let him wear his little cowboy's stuff although the family is all die hard RAMS fans, but I was actually told by my niece that it represented Colonia and I had to stop buying it for my son...poor little guy...but I didn't want to have to worry about it.

Posted by mamaof2 on July 23, 2008 at 9:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)

i think its only the gang members that are part of the injuction or on probabtion or parole. no matter if they are a die hard fan or not they still are not aloud to have cowboys or raiders or SOX not even in there home I believe.

Posted by sirdvsdsw on July 23, 2008 at 9:40 a.m. (Suggest removal)

El Rio wears the "BEARS" (take out the B,A,and S) but they do wear raiders too. A true Cowboys fan can wear the Cowboys attire. I wouldnt have a shaved head, dickies, and tattoos though, you will be questioned and fielded by Mr. Officer

i found this in an article back in Jan:

The injunction prohibits members of Oxnard's largest criminal street gang from engaging in certain activity in a designated so-called "safety zone." This activity includes possessing weapons, public fighting, using gang gestures, drinking alcohol and wearing gang clothing....

ya, confusing...so can they wear the attire outside the "safey zone"???

Posted by vae4usc on July 23, 2008 at 9:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)

HAHA, they actually call it a Saftey Zone?

Note to self: If approached by a gang member in Oxnard, proceed to Safty Zone and inform that gang member of the rules.

Gang members from Colonia dont just wear Cowboys attire, watch out for the "GEORGETOWN" and "COLTS" jerseys too.

vae4usc-lol! I'll make a mental note of that! I'm sure the gang bangers will back right off once in the safety zone!

It should be known gang members in ANY zone are not allowed to wear gang attire..not just in the safety zone...

FedUp-maybe he doesn't have a bank account and maybe this place doesn't charge a fee to cash checks. However; I would never cash a check in the ghetto but I'm sure that is his home and he felt comfortable doing so...still doesn't give someone the right to rob him just because he cashed his check in the ghetto!

No actually FedUp your stupid

What do you consider that ghello, a low envirment area that the city doesnt take care of. and what Camarillo is a high envirement area. so oxnard and el rio is considered ghetto to what. ITS WHAT WE CALL HOME AND WHAT WE GREW UP IN. NOT EVERYONE IS FORTUNATE TO BE LIVIN GOOD. BUT TO SAY THIS KID IS STUPID FOR CASHING HIS CHECK THERE. MAYBE HE DONT HAVE A CHECKING ACCOUNT AND SO FORTH. DONT JUDGE PEOPLE ON WHAT THEY DO UNTIL YOUR IN THEIR SHOES. PEOPLE LIKE YOU MAKE ME SICK

Why does it matter where he was cashing his check? Perhaps he lives in what people are calling the "ghetto" and that is where he goes all the time. Never thinking three POSs are going to rob him. Just cause I go to a bank to cash my check doesn't mean I am not going to get robbed. And about the safety zone and cowboy gear unless you know the entire rules of the injunction don't speak. It goes further than just a "safety zone".
Oh and because an area doesn;t have a sidewalk it is a "ghetto", that is LAME!!!

I think people make their surroundings "GHETTO."
Think about it.I bet when El Rio was first built,Who ever did the construction did not but up buildings with busted out windows and tagging all over.It is people's lack of respect for tax payers and pretty much lack of respect and pride in anything. They claim to proud of where they're from by sporting a certain sports jersey or hat,but really pride is about taking care of yourself and others as well as your enviroment,or hood.Clean that $--- up.Make the parks safe for kids to play in.Pick up trash...how bout this

Yea some will say with rolled up bullet proof windows and locked doors I will...... But I do have to agree to is now ghetto. I was raised there and years ago it was peacful but then you have all these snot nosed brats growing up thinking they are hot poop and made the place worse then what it was. I can tell you, from experience, being robbed is not a joking matter. When I worked many moons ago at a store, I was robbed and beaten to a pulp...for beer. I won't go into the whole race issue, but I will say the experience did put a bit of a bad taste in my mounth for a certin race. I got over it, the race anger, but when I still get phantom pains on a regular basis, I don't get over the lack of respect that these gang girls had for my personal being, their lack of remorse. I know it's a blog, all in good fun, but sometime, put yourselves in the shoes of the victims.

In addition...a lot of you seem to blog on every topic...that's great. I laugh most of the time at the ignorance displayed. Being a the sister of a Murdered sister, the main witness in a stabbing murder trial (not my sister) and the victim of violent crime...I have to day that for most of you it must be nice to be living in "ignorant bliss".

as far as race in the afore mentiond crimes I have experienced:
My sister's murder: she was 1/2 native american, the person responsible for her death was white.
My attack: was by 4 latino, mexican, spanish...whichever is currently the correct PC term
The Murder trial: white skin head stabs white kid for five dollars to buy smokes.
Violence knows no color.
