Mitchell Patrick Fanning, 15, of Ventura received his Eagle Scout Award in a court of honor ceremony May 18 at the Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura.

The award was presented by Glen Gorski, scoutmaster. Also participating in the ceremony were Jordan Hendrix, master of ceremonies; the Rev. Paul Wolkovits, invocation; Dr. Bill Klope Jr., Eagle Scout charge; and Mark Burnell, "The Call of the Eagle."

Fanning is a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 155, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ventura-East.

He joined Scouts as a Tiger Cub in September 1999. As a Cub Scout, Fanning earned the Arrow of Light and Parvuli Dei Award. As a Boy Scout, he earned 37 merit badges and the Bronze Palm, has been a member of the Order of the Arrow and has performed numerous community service projects, including Scouting for Food and California Coastal Cleanup Day.

For his Eagle project, which helped the U.S. Forest Service, Ojai Ranger District, he installed a total of 15 check steps at three creek crossings on the Potrero John Trail in Los Padres National Forest. The project increased trail safety and accessibility. It also helped prevent any further erosion from occurring.

He had 15 helpers, and the project took 118 hours to complete.

At the time he received his award, Fanning was in ninth grade at St. Bonaventure High School. His activities have included the Interact Club, football, basketball and baseball.

He is the son of Peter and Cindy Fanning of Ventura.
