Morning Report: Oxnard sandwich shop robbed

Police and Fire: A man with a gun robbed an Oxnard sandwich shop last night, police said.

The robber entered Jersey Mike's Subs at 2041 N. Oxnard Boulevard about 9 p.m., displayed a handgun and took cash from the register, said Sgt. Paul Cumming of the Oxnard police.

The robber then left the business and ran through a parking lot. He was wearing a blue baseball cap and appeared to be 20 to 30 years old.

No one was hurt during the robbery.

----------

Traffic: At 6:40 a.m., the California Highway Patrol was reporting a minor injury accident on Central Avenue at Santa Clara Avenue outside Ventura. The crash was originally reported at 6:06 a.m.

The CHP this morning was also reporting that a vehicle hit a dumpster about 6:08 a.m. on Heatherton Drive at Kingsgrove Drive in unincorporated area between Camarillo and Fillmore. No injuries were reported in that crash.

----------

Weather: Mostly sunny conditions are expected throughout the county today after patchy morning clouds and fog, the National Weather Service reported.

Forecasters predict high temperatures in the 70s at beaches and into the mid 90s in valleys and local mountains.

What is it going to take for citizens to arm and protect themselves, next time someone will get hurt or worst.

I hear you omie- plus, these punks keep robbing places where most likely young, teenagers are working their 1st jobs, this kind of thing could scar them for life! My husband ran a pizza place, and they were robbed, and he still to this day gets the creeps when he talks about how he was told to lay on the floor and had a gun to the back of his head! And this was like 15 years ago!

I wonder if this is the same guy who robbed the Longs Drug Store in Ventura yesterday. This is scary in this society today because you never know what could happen, and who has a gun..

So, yet another robbery. HuenemeGirl, you're right, a lot of these employees are working their first jobs and it's sad they have to experience this. How about the guy robbing the place try getting a job of their own and earn their $ the legit way??

They should have taken a loaf of sourdough to the side of the robbers dome. And no...we shouldn't be allowed to carry guns. Do you know how many idiots would be shooting their huevos off and how many innocent bystanders would be shot by people carrying guns who don't know how to use them? Bad idea.

Hi Relvd98...Happy Tuesday! Seriously though, arming people isn't the answer. To stop all this crime, we need more programs for DRUG ADDICTS, because 9 out of 10 times it's someone needing to get high that pulls these cheesy little robberies. Real criminals rob banks and stuff.....REAL CRIMINALS!!

Not to get into a big discussion about gun control, etc...but just FYI - the crime rates in most Arizona cities are much higher than in most California cities.

For example the crime rate in Oxnard is considerably lower than the rates in Phoenix, Glendale, Peoria, Gilbert, Mesa, Tempe....Oxnard is even lower than Scottsdale and Flagstaff.

Thats certainly not my intent Junior...but it's violent and property crimes...here are the overall numbers according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Crimes per 1,000 people:

Oxnard - 31

Phoenix - 72
Scottsdale - 42
Peopria - 46
Mesa - 58
Flagstaff - 83
Gilbert - 37
Glendale - 62
Tempe - 86

And for good measure:

Ventura - 40
Santa Barbara - 37

Are you in a position where you are able to share the people's concerns and ideas for change?

I lived in Oxnard for many years in my life over different periods and it just seems there is so much potential for the area but there are so many unsavory areas that honestly, I don't even go into Oxnard unless I have no alternative.

Here is a good resource for Ventura County crime reports. While crimes per 1000 is one way to look at the numbers, differing populations in each city can skew the numbers.

Mr. Keith, I wish I had solutions to the problems...I'd probably be getting alot more accomplished than just these spreadsheets I am working on at the moment.

Personally, I would love to see funding cut for any and alll extras the prisoners receive and see that excess money spent on more police officers and additional training for the police officers as to how to minimize the affects of street terrorism. I would love to see victims receiving more rights than the criminals who victimize them, I would like to see prisoners out doing hard labor and working off their debts to society, especially those who are contributing to the identity theft epidemic. They are capable of going out and working in the fields and orchards locally in turn cutting the prices of produce and eliminating the jobs that are luring people here illegally to find work.

Just my two cents...(Let the attacks begin!)

We put these people in power and get nothing in return from them and that is a blanket statement of both parties.

PJ - The stats are for crimes per 1,000 people per year...so, in other words for every 1,000 Camarillo residents - about 17 of them were a victim of a crime last year.

Oxnard's rate has actually fallen a little further from what I said earlier today - we're down to about 26 crimes per 1,000 residents per year.

In 1992 the number was nearly 70 crimes per thousand in Oxnard per year...so while media reports tend to scare people more and more - the facts are the crime rate here in Oxnard and really throughout Ventura County has dropped dramatically over the past 15 years.

In my personal opinion - the reason for this is the advent of 24 hour news coverage...they've got to fill lots of time and so we hear more and more about things that would never have been broadcast 15-20 years ago....turn on Fox or CNN or MSNBC at any hour - and look at the crime stuff they cover....I mean - do we really care about a police pursuit in Cleveland, Ohio?

The last stats I looked at showed that while crime in the U.S. is down about 30% over the last couple decades - media coverage of crime is UP 165%...so what's wrong with this picture?

Sorry, got carried away on my soap box there for a little bit.

Posted by hotwildflower on July 22, 2008 at 2:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Mr. Keith, I know this doesn't have anything to do with the story, but may slightly relate...in agreement with what you say, don't you find that crimes seem to be more and more bold because they broadcast so much. I feel like people see it all over the news and think they can pull off that job.

I also think many of the child molestations, school shootings and such are because they are all over the TV, I could be wrong, but I think the media coverage of this stuff to the degree we have seen it has made so many of us numb, yet it almost seems to encourage those who are ready to jump off the edge at any moment.

I believe in freedom of the press, I believe we have a right to have the news reported to us but I also think media outlets have a responsibility of their own to use better judgement.

Wow, do I have a chip on my shoulder today or what?!?

They really believe they won't get caught and when they do, it's always someone else's fault and I have noticed that to be true when I watch people react to being caught...it's amazing.

Anyways, back to my spreadsheets...I have a deadline to meet.

Posted by at8man on July 22, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Mr. Keith isn't comparing Oxnard to Phoenix like comparing apples to oranges, considering the population difference. Seems to me that Phoenix is over several million. Maricopa County is 3 million plus and Sheriff Joe doesn't put up with much BS, so 72 is a relatively low number put into perspective.

Posted by dkeith1397 on July 22, 2008 at 3:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The numbers I offered are per capita so population is factored in.

You do have a valid point in one sense - big cities have more challenges than small ones...just like Oxnard has more challenges than Ojai for instance...or Phoenix and Oxnard as you stated.

But more than size - I would say it's the way a city is designed...newer cities tend to be much safer than older ones...for lots of reasons

It is our perception that Oxnard is a high-crime area due to media. Granted many people think that this area is the root of many problems in Ventura county such as Oxnard people moving in Ventura or Camarillo and causing crimes there.

It is funny how people are quick to blame others for issues because it is easy for them rather than find the root of the issue and try to resolve them. Its like lets create more kids activites and do nothing to support them.

Out of all the areas in Ventura county I have lived in I prefer Oxnard because I have seen the facts and it is a safe place to live at due to having the better police agency.

DKeith,

Which design factors have you noticed that play the bigger roles in reducing crime within a city?

Posted by dkeith1397 on July 22, 2008 at 4:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Bugmenot - Alleys are a huge one - carports are another...both are common in older cities while you don't see much of that in newer cities....there is an entire science dedicated to this topic - it's called "crime prevention through environmental design".

The theory is that if cities, housing areas, commercial areas, etc...are designed a certain way - crime will occur much less often - a theory which has been proven time and time again.

It's easier of course to design a city from scratch rather than having to change one that's been here 105 years. That's the challenge of policing older cities.

Wait, how come the newer neighborhoods, such as those behind St. John's already look run down and tagged up? If the city was building in a way to be more effective on crime, why is a brand new area already looking like that?

I bought a new house in there in '99 thinking it was going to be totally different than "Oxnard", heck no...we caught some guy in our garage trying to steal our son's skateboard, our block wall was tagged, someone tore up our grass doing burn outs...I took the money and ran while prices were up!

Posted by bugmenot on July 22, 2008 at 5:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I grew up in south Oxnard. We have alleys. When I was young we shared a much larger dumpster for every 3-4 houses. In the early 90s sometime we all received a blue bin and a trash dumpster and were told to place them in FRONT of our houses. That was the day our alleys became obsolete. People have been shot in the alley behind my house. Every month or so you would see somebody having sex or doing drugs in the alleys, especially when a wall was built to allow access to a dumpster from inside the backyard, creating a recess in the wall where it would be easy to hide and not seen from the street.

Growing up, i always wondered why the city (or whomever owns the alleys) didn't just divide the space and give the land to the home owners. Basically get rid of the alleys.

Perhaps make an agreement that the homeowner can obtain additional land if they pay for a fence for the additional land.

dkeith1397, I worked in northern arizona in the late '80s My first experience at a local gas station was a bunch of bikers filling up their bikes and wearing sidearms. I was from CA and it was a little freaky. but they acted like normal people. and other normal people went about their business. here's a crime stat from northern AZ.. Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 401. The number of murders and homicides was 1. The violent crime rate was 7.1 per 1,000 people. .. the city is Flagstaff similar to Oxnard. Let's compare apples to apples. signed; reluctent gun owner in S.P.

Good day Mr. Kieth. Thank you for your service and dedication to our fine city. This may be slightly off topic, however may I say that I think a solution to some of Oxnard's crimes rests somewhere near the source or root of these crimes. OPD in cooperation with Ventura County Probation USED TO offer The Parent Project classes which I used to facilitate free of charge, with one of your officers who gets paid to do so. By the way, he's a great guy and officer. Somehow, somewhere along the line however, this program was moved to a strictly Spanish language format, of which I am not fluent unfortunately. Do you think Oxnard would benefit from going back to more options for parents to help them better influence their kids and keep them away form drugs, gangs and crime? I thought the Parent Project worked miracles for all the parents I educated and wish it was used more instead of less like it is. Today's kids ARE tomorrow leaders and the parents are the ones who can influence their kids best with the right tools. I am more than willing to get back into helping this way if I can. Maybe you could keep me in mind and see about expanding the Parent Project class availability in Oxnard. I think that it will help us build a better more cooperative future for tomorrow's adults. I really believe that The Parent Project class should be a prerequisite to child birth. If there is anything else I can do to make Oxnard an even better place to live with what I have to offer, I am IN 100%!!! Kind regards, a now 44 year Oxnard native!
