Volunteers sought to glean produce
Ventura County's regional food bank is seeking volunteers to glean produce from fields and backyards as well as property owners willing to allow the practice on their land.
The bank, known as FOOD Share, began 30 years ago with volunteer gleaners who pick crops that would otherwise be discarded. But gleaning has declined in recent years with changes in farming practices and too few people to replace aging volunteers.
The agency is in particular need of fields where vegetables can be harvested, but also gleans produce from orchards and backyards.
To donate crops through gleaning, call Lance Ferguson at 983-7100, ext. 135. To volunteer as a gleaner or in another capacity, call Meg Horton, ext. 105.
FOOD Share, based in Oxnard, serves more than 30,000 people monthly.
