Montalvo, Port Hueneme display Little League power

Montalvo and Port Hueneme have taken the Sub Division 3 North tournaments by storm.

The Montalvo Junior Little Leaguers collected 21 hits to open their quest to win the Southern California championship at Conejo Creek Park in Thousand Oaks. Montalvo defeated Section 2 champion Encino, 19-9, its opening game on Sunday.

Montalvo needed a victory Monday night against Murphy Ranch to play for the North Bracket championship on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

The Port Hueneme Senior Division All-Stars earned a pair of wins in the Division 3 North Bracket Tournament at Palmdale Little League.

Jose Hernandez pitched a scoreless first inning and Jesus Valdez registered 13 strikeouts to complete a 12-1 win over Tri Park Little of Lawndale on Saturday. Port Hueneme collected 14 hits.

Port Hueneme smashed seven homers on Sunday night to defeat Buena Park, 14-3, to play in today's 6 p.m. championship game. Tri Park battled Buena Park in Monday night's elimination game.

In the Buena Park game, Brandon Hernandez allowed three runs in the first inning. Jose Hernandez came to the rescue by holding Buena Park scoreless.

Port Hueneme's bats did the talking.

Port Hueneme blasted five homers in the fourth inning. Jose Hernandez hit two homers in the same inning. Jesus Valdez, Manuel Perez and Johnjon Enriquez hit back to back-to-back homers. Manuel Perez and Dom Guevarra homered in the fith inning.

If Port Hueneme wins tonight it will play against the South Bracket champion on Saturday at 2 p.m. A second game with the South will follow. If a deciding game is necessary, it will be played Sunday at 6 p.m.

The Southern California champion plays in the Western Regional Tournament July 29 to Aug. 5 in Upland. Washington plays Nevada in the July 29 opener at 7 p.m. Southern California plays the Game 1 winner on July 30 at 7 p.m. The regional winner advances to the Senior Baseball World Series Aug. 10-16 in Bangor, Maine.

Montalvo success: Nathaniel Palace had a two-run homer in the first and the 14-15-year-old All-Stars continued its playoff run. Corey Dodge scored on the homer. Allen Colborn had a single to score Dalton Rocha for a 3-0 lead in the first.

Marcus Sandoval scored in the second and Kahlil Pipersburg scored in the third to give Montalvo a 5-1 lead. Montalvo scored six more in the top of the fourth highlighted by a Jordon Yanez double.

Encino closed the gap to 11-8 after five innings, but Montalvo exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away. Dodge worked four innings for the victory allowing four hits while striking out eight. Dodge also scored three runs.

Rocha had two hits and reached base six times scoring three runs. Pipersburg had three hits. Jeff Schwartz had three hits, including a triple in the top of the seventh. Yanez was 3 for 4 with two doubles. Phillip Bickford was 3-5 and Brett Ramirez had a double and a single.

Tyler Phillips continues to add speed with his base running. Wesley Dodge scored a run and added a single. The team is managed by Frank Dodge with Jerry Durham and David Rocha as coaches.

If Montalvo wins the North Bracket, it will play Saturday at Conejo Creek at 1 p.m. against the South winner. A second game will follow at 4 p.m. If a deciding game is needed, it will be played Sunday at 10 a.m. The Sub Division 3 champion plays in the West Region starting July 29 in Aliso Viejo. Taylor, Mich., will host the Junior World Series Aug. 10-16.

Dedicated man: Earl Stone of Thousand Oaks has been involved in District 13 Little League for 50 years, including coaching and running the show.

"Earl has done everything in Little League except play the game," said Dennis May, former Thousand Oaks Little League president.

May has spent 25 years of volunteer service to Little League.

Stone and May were watching all the action last week when Dos Pueblos was playing in the Section 1 11-12-year-old tournament in Moorpark.

Stone threw a perfect strike in the deciding game first-pitch ceremony.

Dos Pueblos celebrated its first title by winning two straight over District 13 champion Thousand Oaks, 12-0 and 8-0. Thousand Oaks stunned DP, 6-5, in the opening game. Dos Pueblos (11-1) needed five straight wins to celebrate the league's first Major Division Section 1 crown. Dos Pueblos hit 29 homers before the start of the Southern California Tournament in Orange.

Sportsmanship Trophy: The Thousand Oaks 12-year-old All-Stars received the Sportsmanship Trophy in the 50th annual CBC Junior Baseball Tournament in Port Hueneme. The players are Sebastian Afshari, Austin Alvary, Thomas Bodenhamer, Michael DeLeon, Ezequiel Guzman, Ernie Hernandez, Jack Kramer, Chris Morrow, Blake Mouvet, Nick Pasky and Brett Townsend. Sharks victorious: The 10-and-under Oxnard Sharks won all three of their games of pool play and were seeded No. 1 with a first-round bye.

In the second and third rounds, the Sharks had numerous hits, but were unable to capitalize and left runners in scoring position. The Sharks relied on their excellent defense and strong pitching to win both games by the score of 3-2 against the West Covina Fear and the Puerto Rico Angels.

The Sharks waited until the final inning to put the winning runs across home plate. The Sharks were the only team with out a loss which meant that Chino Hills would have to beat them twice on Sunday.

The Sharks were looking for the early-morning win and the championship.

Turner McDonald pitched a complete game, giving up one hit and two unearned runs, with many players contributing offensively and defensively, as the Sharks won the game, 6-2, to win the title. The tournament awarded the Outstanding Offensive Player Award to Ramon Gomez, who was on base 12 times in 14 at-bats.

The MVP Award was presented to Turner McDonald, who pitched 13 innings, giving up two unearned runs and registering 16 strikeouts.

Sharks players include Mason Harvey, Jeremy Herrera, Jake Constantine, Frankie Tostado, Darius Vines, Jaime Lopez, Tony Hernandez, Tony Contreras, Gabe Vargas and John McGill.

Coaches are Pete Hernandez, Greg Herrera, Ricardo Tostado.
