Giants send tight end Shockey to Saints for draft picks
Jeremy Shockey caught more passes for more yards as a rookie — the one season when New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton was his offensive coordinator in New York — than any other.
The Giants, meanwhile, proved they didn't need their disgruntled star tight end to pull off one of the most stunning playoff runs in NFL history, winning three postseason contests on the road and then beating previously undefeated New England in the Super Bowl — all while the injured Shockey watched from afar.
So the Giants sought to do both themselves and Shockey a favor on Monday, cutting ties with the four-time Pro Bowl selection in a deal the Saints had been trying to pull off for months.
The Giants will get second- and fifth-round picks in the 2009 draft in exchange for sending Shockey to the team he wanted to play for most. The trade must be approved by the league and is contingent on Shockey passing a physical.
The Saints report to training camp in Jackson, Miss., on Wednesday, when Shockey will join several other tight ends on New Orleans' roster, including last year's starter, Eric Johnson, along with Westlake High graduate Billy Miller and Mark Campbell.
Shockey's arrival could take away some of Miller's time on the field.
Bears, Urlacher reportedly reach deal: The Chicago Bears and linebacker Brian Urlacher agreed to a contract extension through the 2012 season, according to published reports.
The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times reported that the extension is worth $18 million, including a $6 million signing bonus. The Bears declined to confirm the deal.
Taylor glad to be a Redskin: Jason Taylor characterized his split from the Miami Dolphins as amicable as he was officially introduced as the newest member of the Washington Redskins on Monday night.
The defensive end, who was acquired from Miami for two draft picks the day before, arrived in town and underwent a physical.
"I am very pleased to be a Washington Redskin right now," Taylor said. "It was a whirlwind the last 24 hours."
Arizona signs second-round pick: The Arizona Cardinals signed second-round pick Calais Campbell, leaving first-round selection Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie as their only unsigned draft choice heading into training camp. Campbell, a defensive end out of Miami, signed a four-year deal. Terms weren't disclosed.
Bengals' Johnson will report, but will be limited: Receiver Chad Johnson said he'll report on time for the Cincinnati Bengals' training camp next weekend, but his surgically repaired ankle will probably prevent him from fully participating.
Allen still might play this season for 49ers: San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Nolan said he believes guard Larry Allen might consider postponing his retirement to return for his 15th NFL season. Allen, an 11-time Pro Bowler, spent the last two seasons with the 49ers after leaving the Cowboys.
Patriots sign four: The New England Patriots signed free-agent tackle Anthony Clement, along with a wide receiver and two of their draft picks. The team signed linebacker Shawn Crable and quarterback Kevin O'Connell, two players drafted in the third round this year. Also getting a contract was wide receiver Chris Dunlap.
