Pioneer History Day brings "edutainment" to Strathearn Park

Roundup your friends and family because on Saturday, August 23rd, you'll all want to be at Strathearn Historical Park for a day of historical...and sometimes hysterical activities! The gates open at 10am and until 4pm there are ongoing performances, events demonstrations, special displays, games, food and fun in about every cranny of the park.

Pioneer History Day is a great time to revisit Simi Valley's roots and remember (or learn about) how things used to be. This year's program promises to not only sneak in a little history education, but the entertainment will also get you laughing, singing, clapping or even dancing.

Two special performances are on tap:

At 1pm in the Visitor Center, enjoy a Living History re-enactment of a "Victorian Stripper". Dorothea Phelan from the Museum of Ventura County performs as a pretentious mistress with her ditzy maid as they share the historical perspective on their social mores - while the fashions-of-the-day are shed. This performance is "edutainment" for all ages!

At 2pm everyone will want to head to the big barn with Fred Godfrey's 18 member band, "Jazz N Banjos". Barn dances used to be a major source of recreation for our local pioneers and this banjo group really knows how to re-create the good old days. All ages can participate by doing anything from toe tapping to dancing. Seating with tables is available for those who can resist hitting the dance floor.

Throughout the day there will be non-stop activities provided by Simi Valley Model-A Ford Club, San Fernando Valley Model T Club, Western Antique Power Association, Rusty Relics, Topa Topa Flywheelers, Valley Flywheelers, Simi Settlers Amateur Radio Club plus horseshoeing demonstrations for the "city folks". Simi Valley Kiwanis will have their Chuck-Wagon BBQ cranking out tasty summer specialties at reasonable prices.

Entrance to this event is $7 at the gate and includes all activities. Strathearn Park is at 137 Strathearn Place in Simi Valley (West from Madera Road). Information: 805-526-6453.
