Rocks thrown from Simi Valley overpass damage 6 cars, 2 arrested

Two juveniles were arrested this weekend on suspicion of throwing rocks off a freeway overpass and damaging six cars, authorities said.

The juveniles, aged 11 and 15, were arrested about 9 p.m. Sunday on a bridge over Highway 118 at Yosemite Avenue in Simi Valley, said Officer Randy Pickens of the Moorpark CHP. They were later released to their parents.

Six cars on Highway 118 eastbound were damaged by rocks the teens allegedly threw onto the roadway, Pickens said. No one was injured.

A Ventura County probation officer was seriously injured June 11 when a rock thrown from a bridge over Highway 101 at Wendy Drive crashed through her sunroof and struck her in the head. She was unable to work for almost a month.

Investigators this morning did not have any information to indicate the two incidents were related, Pickens said.

You would think that a night in Juvie would have been a good start.

What's up with all these pre-teens and teens being out at night?

A month in Juvenile Hall away from their "mommies" would be a start, but they need to go after the parents and get peoples attention. My 10 years old isnt allowed outside the house other then the back yard without a parent, let alone stand on an overpass & throw rocks...

It is amazing how many parents don't watch there children, my child played on a sports team last year and there were 5 parent that never came to watch a game. It is so sad that people have childen and they loose interest. I feel so bad for the children. If more parent spent time with there children and knew their friends and that they were doing, we would see a huge differeance in our children. I am having to take care of other people children because they have no food or money and I am driving them around. My child thanks me all the time so it is worth it. These are good kids that miss there parent. It's sad. Being a parent it's alway easy, but if you put in the effort it, you will see a huge reward.

Great post Camarillomom, you nailed it right on the head.

camarillomom...how nice of you to do that for others, you have such a big heart.

hey, why are you people not getting on these kids and their parents. If these kids would have been from oxnard, you guys would have killed them. Anyways, they should make an example out of these kids because of the incident that happened with the probation officer. My friends and I used to egg cars, but never with things that could kill people.

Posted by Just_wondering on July 21, 2008 at 11:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)

you are so right Camarillomom!!! My kids also play on sports teams and it completely blows me away that I don't see parents for the entire season, or only see them once or twice. It's like once their kids hit a certain age, they don't think they need to be involved in their lives. I feel so bad for those kids that are playing baseball or basketball and have no one in the stands cheering them on. That just breaks my heart. Your duty as a parent is not over once they hit 10 people!!! Being involved in your kids lives on a daily basis is what keeps them out of trouble!

Yea...missing805, do not worry, my dear friend Junior will be on their tails!

Junior, please take their iPods, cell phones and lighters away and give those kids their punishment!

When my kids where in sports a little boy came up to me and said; You are always here at the games and even during practice. I wish my mom would do the same. After that, I went to all his games too.

Fair comment about the word "teens." It's now corrected.

Let's all take turns throwing rocks at their dummies. They also need to get jobs where they can pay for all the car damage & retribution to the victims.

Camarillo_mom, I agree with you to a certain extent. My next door neighbor is a single mom (Dad supports, but lives out of state)) who works extremely hard to support her family. She puts her kids into sports so they won't be tempted to throw rocks off of overpasses. She would love to attend her kids sporting events, but she can't. Her kids would also not be out after dark on any night of the week!

Posted by gen on July 21, 2008 at 1:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)

What the heck is an 11 year old doing out at 9pm?! I had a curfew of DARK until I was 13.

I can only assume that the 15 year old was perhaps an older sibling, responsible for watching the 11 year old. I mean, after all in today's society not all families have the luxury of having only one working parent so that can account for why many of your children have friends and teammates that don't have a parent at a game or practice. Even when I was growing up (20 years ago) both my parents were working so I know what that's like. I'm not saying this is an excuse but the reality is this is happening more and more.

Wow, as if we don't have enough to worry about while driving, in between the people who STILL use their cell phones and drive 55 mph in the fast lane, and those that cut you off when there's less than a foot for them to squeeze in...now we have to look out for rocks falling out of the sky. Geez! Glad no one was seriously hurt this time.

Their Dads where probably at Snookys and the moms where probably at EL Patio Cantina,,,,

They're lucky they didnt kill anyone. Insane!

Hope the parents enjoy paying for all those cars!

what is wrong with these kids? I hope they make an example out of these kids to maybe prevent others from doing this.

Posted by sirdvsdsw on July 21, 2008 at 1:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I blame the overpasses. If these overpasses were not near the freeway this would have never happened! Maybe the city should clean up all the rocks in the area too...I blame the rocks too!!!!

rcamacho- LOL!!!

I think you have to either live in Simi or be very familiar with Simi to appriciate the humor in that comment.

maybe if we make an example of these two teens by making them hold a sign that reads "i threw rocks from the overpass, throw one at me" and stand at a major intersection. i bet you no one will imitate them.

Stupid, stupid kids! They are so lucky that no one was injured.

If my kids ever pulled a stunt like that they'd be begging to go to juvenile hall so they wouldn't have to deal with me.

"A 9-year-old boy is in critical condition today as a result of injuries sustained when two juveniles threw a baseball-sized rock through the passenger window of his family's SUV, striking the boy in the side of the head and shattering glass onto the boy and throughout the vehicle."

-- This is how the article easily could have read if the rock had hit our car 15" forward of where it did hit. We were on our way home from a family birthday party when what seemed like a gunshot shattered our SUV’s rear side window, at the exact height and just over a foot behind where my 9 year old nephew's fragile little head was. To clarify: these boys were on the side of the freeway with a pile of large rocks throwing them at passing cars (the rock was thrown through a side window with enough force to blow a grapefruit-sized hole through tempered, tinted safety glass).

This was malicious, deliberate, and VERY easily could have killed one or more people. My family and I count our blessings that nothing worse happened.

victim6 - wow, that is horrible! Thank you for the first hand account of this story. I am so thankful that no one in your car was injured.

What in the world made these kids think that any of this was okay? Tragic that they're already making very bad decisions.

I'd love for one of the parents of these "angels" to post here about what's being done to make sure this never, ever happens again at the hands of their children.

juniormafia_ny...so true! When I was little my sisters and I were riding with my uncle in his van. A kid threw a rock and hit the van and he backed that van all the way up the street, got out, and scared the living daylights out of that kid.

My guess is he never threw another rock.

It's a sad story that kids left unsupervised, and apparently untaught, go out and do such stupid things. In addition to any punishment the kids get, the parents should be held financially responsible.

Let the beatings commence!

(ha ha...that's what I tell my kids!)

Posted by sirdvsdsw on July 21, 2008 at 3:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)

We should let these kids jump on there bikes...better yet have there parents drive them down our streets and we should be able to throw rocks at them!

juniormafia_ny...when I beat them I do it in front of the US Flag and then I make them say the Pledge of Allegiance...

Beat them. If they weren't sorry, make them sorry. My son knows better. If he didn't, I would teach him. He would be begging for Juvie instead of my punishment. They should put the parent's pictures in the newspaper. They ought to be ashamed. People could have died. Friggin' kids. If they are doing these kind of things at this young age, wonder what they'll be like once they're legal with cars and booze. Yikes!

Anytime my brother and I got outta line, my parents just had to apprear to walk towards where they kept the belt and we'd straighten up.

Ah man, I don't have any kids but I give you parents out there props (the ones who have raised well-behaved, respectful kids).

butterflygone...amen to that sista!

My kids: "You're the meanest mom in the world."
Me: "Good, that means I win the contest. And guess what? I can be more mean!"

Someone could have been killed and we would have another set of juvenile murderers in this county. Where are the parents?? Working or drinking Coronas in this blazing heat. Children these days to be taught some respect!!

Grammadee- your right, we don’t always know a family predicament, and what appears to be a true giver does not always come from the heart, as in may be with cam-mom? I commend the parents who cannot make the games to at least keep their children active in sports. I know many families who cannot make games because of illness. I always notice that these goody good people are the first to cast out opinions, are the more bitter ones because “I’m having to …”. A known fact, that these parents are apparently trying to do the best they can.
And you too cam-mom.
Is it possible in the situations of the 5 children that these childrens’ parents are ill, and old aunt bea or grampie has lost control?
It happens. So ease up on the childrens parents at the games.
Furthermore, its not fair to compare these two family predicaments.
Right-on Grammadee

These kids should be sent to the homes of the owners of the 6 cars that they struck with the rocks and let those car owners dish out their punishment!

Posted by bill on July 21, 2008 at 7:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I think everyone is missing the point... we should outlaw rocks, or at least limit their availability to minors and felons. Maybe pass a law that outlaws the carrying of more than 6 rocks at a time, or rocks over 1" in diameter, and we should definitly outlaw the carrying of concealed rocks. Rocks are too dangerous to be available to just anyone. Our overworked politicians should take the time to pass legislation to control this very dangerous weapon.

Posted by live_for_purpose on July 22, 2008 at 5:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Too many people have too many kids that they can not or will not guide, control, supervise, discipline, love, and otherwise take care of. Or sometimes financially support.

You people should try birth control. It is not a sin.

I kid you not, last night on the pedestrian overpass near the pier at around 9 pm, I saw 6 little kids, the oldest not older than 11, running across Harbor Blvd. off the pier and over the overpass, by themselves! The youngest had to have been 6 or 7! Where the heck were the parents!! With the lack of parenting I have been witness to over the years, this kind of activity doesn't really surprise me anymore. Definately charge the parents for damages, and for child neglect.
