Bear that wandered into Meiners Oaks tranquilized, released

A bear wandered that into a neighborhood outside Ojai this morning was tranquilized and released back into the wild, authorities said.

Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies responded about 7:30 a.m. to a report of a large bear in the 400 block of Lomita Avenue in Meiners Oaks.

The bear climbed a tree in the 500 block of Pala Drive, where deputies kept watch over the animal for several hours, said Capt. Ross Bonfiglio of the Sheriff’s department.

Officials from the California Department of Fish and Game tranquilized the bear about 10:30 a.m. The bear was then taken to a remote location and released, Bonfiglio said.

I am very happy to hear that Fish & Game did the right thing this time and tranquilized the bear, rather that shooting it like they did once before ('bout a year ago?). Thank you Fish & Game for keeping this animal alive!!

If the bear was wearing a black baseball cap, dark jacket and jeans then it may have robbed a Ventura drug store.
