Chivas USA unable to advance after tie
FULLERTON — Shalrie Joseph scored the tying goal on a header in the 78th minute as New England tied Chivas USA 1-1 in a SuperLiga match Sunday night.
The draw allowed New England to secure the Group B title, while Chivas USA needed Santos to beat Pachuca in the final group stage match later Sunday to advance. Santos and Pachuca tied 1-1.
Ante Razov scored Chivas' goal in the 59th minute, the only goal New England allowed in three SuperLiga group matches.
Daniel Paladini sent a ball in Razov's path. After slipping past the defense, Razov picked up the ball, dribbled into the penalty area and fired a 15-yard shot on goal. New England goalkeeper Matt Reis slowed the ball down with his left hand, but Razov controlled the rebound and knocked the ball into an empty net.
Razov has scored in six consecutive matches. He scored in Chivas' final three regular-season games before the start of SuperLiga, and has scored one goal in each of Chivas' group stage matches.
The goal tied Razov with Houston's Stuart Holden and Atlante's Luis Gabriel Rey for the most tournament goals.
The match was played at Titan Stadium on the campus of Cal State-Fullerton. Home Depot Center, Chivas' home stadium, was unavailable because of preparations for the upcoming X Games, which will start July 31.
The last non-exhibition soccer match played at Titan Stadium was a US Open Cup semifinal match between Los Angeles and Dallas in 2002.
