3 arrested in brawl at wedding reception

Ventura police have arrested three people in what they said was a fight at a wedding reception inside the Knights of Columbus Hall involving 100 to 150 people.

When officers arrived about 10:53 p.m. Saturday, several people were still fighting at the hall at 36 Figueroa St., police said in a news release. It took about 15 officers to disperse "the drunken crowd" at the reception, according to police.

They said Delphina Hernandez, 52, mother of the groom, suffered a knife cut to her face.

Paramedics treated Hernandez at the scene. She was later taken to Ventura County Medical Center for treatment and then released, police said.

Police arrested Max Ledesma, 18, and Jonathan Sanchez, 19, both of Ventura, and Joe Martinez, 34, of Santa Paula, on suspicion of fighting in public and resisting arrest.

The three were taken to Ventura County Jail.

Sanchez was being held Sunday evening on $25,000 bail. No bail information was available for Ledesma, and Martinez had been released.

Police also cited a juvenile at the scene. The juvenile was later released.

Police said several officers suffered minor scratches and bruises in the melee.

what's a wedding without a fight..

Posted by desdave on July 21, 2008 at 4 a.m. (Suggest removal)

You're so right laker, drink a bunch of beer, have brawl. Nothing says I love you like good wedding reception fight. That is just about the most low life, trailer trash thing there is.

By the way, is there something in some groups DNA, that when exposed to alcohol, results in uncontrollable violence? I mean come on, fights/stabbings/shootings at weddings, birthdays, block parties, or any other normally fun gathering, have become almost the norm. I know, sounds like stereotyping, but if the sun rises every morning is it stereotypeing say that it will probably rise tomorrow as well?

Low lifes + alcohol + cake knives + getting dissed by someone while waiting in line for cake = Bloody violence!

I wonder if it was the bride or groom that married into this, or if they each brought the same family values (or should I say LACK OF values) to the table? What a great way to start a life together! Oxnard rules! :-)

Jill: How about this? Wedding dress: $2,000.00; Caterer: $5,000.00; Florist: $1,500.00; Your new husband getting stabbed in the neck by your bridesmaid's cousin, Paco: Priceless. Life comes at you fast...for everything else, there's Mastercard.

hahaha! You beat me to it! That went through my mind, too. These post are so funny. Can you say D-I-V-O-R-C-E? Or maybe an annulment might be a good move for one of the parties. Although I have some relatives that the banjo playing from "Deliverance" would be perfect background music for. And, no, they are not invited to formal occasions!

The Knights of Columbus raise money by renting out the Hall ... and all profits go directly to charitible causes. I certainly hope that the Knights do not have to absorb any costs or other liability from the riot.

This one has me more disgusted than usual because I can relate to it. At our church, quinceañera parties and wedding receptions have resulted in literally pounds of gum on the bottoms of pews, tequila bottles broken in the parking lot and other damage. When quinceañera parties and wedding receptions are held in our parish hall, security is required. This is not as it should be.

Regarding the three males who were arrested, one has escaped appearances in Ventura County Superior Court ... at least until now ... unless he was there as a juvenile. Two of them are convicted felons, one just barely into the adult category. Amongst the two, we see charges ranging from street terrorism, to deadly weapons, committing a felony to benefit a street gang, the expected not showing financial responsibility and on to residential burglary. Many of the charges were dropped by the DA which is indicative of yet another problem.

Congratulations to the judges, civil rights attorneys and activists who are succeeding, little by little, in driving the deterioration of what was a wonderful place to live.

Wow!!! Just another prime example of how absolutely wonderful alcohol is.I am so sad for the aunts, uncles, and most importantly the CHILDREN that were exposed to such nonsense.I know this family very well and I am very glad that we chose not to attend.I have mad love for this family but I am also aware of the fact that alcohol was definetly gonna be a factor in this occasion and that it would probably turn out to be disasterous.I am so sad for the bride and groom that this will be the memory that taints there special day.BTW they atr not trashy people but I guess guilt by association is ood enough in this case.I did not think Delphina was the grooms mom cause she definetly did not play the role for a long long time. The fact that she is being labeled as the grooms mom really makes this story look worse the it already is.

The bride a groom have been together for a long time already.in excess of 5 years. They are cool people.Alcohol changes everything.I think the groom may have some questionable friends but that's his business.Sober this is a good family and they are a tight BIG family. They have been around Ventura for a long long time. I saw this article in the paper this morning and KNEW that this was gonna be the chat of the day. I knew people would be having a hay day with assumptions and trashing people they don't know.So not suprised that the simple minded judgemental did not let me down. BTW I also do not think very highly of Delphina.I have known her for a long time because I grew up on the Avenue and doi not feel she deserves to be called a mother.

Posted by BeaHappi on July 21, 2008 at 9:54 a.m. (Suggest removal)

shuldbworkin805...they probably are cool people but they didn't use good judgement at their wedding apparently. I would have shut the bar down once it was obvious that people were way too wasted...especially with "questionable" friends in attendance.

And please, admit it...if you didn't know this couple you'd be chiming in with the barbs too.

First of all everyone needs to stop withn the stupid comments that's not what happen, Delfina is not the grooms mother she was related what happen to her was a accident. The Mother of the groom did not get hurt she was fine. Also there was no 100 to 150 people fighting, it was way less than that the rest of them were trying to break it up the people fighting were just big and strong. There were no knifs involve at all there were bottles thrown and that's how people got hurt. The fight was not start by the grooms Family Or the Bride's Family, it was people that were not invited to the party. So the paper and the officers gave the wrong info, Its still not right what happen but it happen, common who doesen't get drunk and get loud theire is always someone that acts stupid, There always people that come to partys that are not invited some people just mess up I guess. What happen happen already but the story is not right it was not that bad like they make it seem. So people stop with the commements even though Some one will still say somthing negative. But the party was great! before all that happen.

Just so you all know,I am not geting a$$ hurt by your comments.I knew there would be some funny comments here. That is a lot of why I am staying logged on.I just felt someone needed to bring the realness of the situtation in.LH I did not think Delphina was his mom but was not sure about that. She is Joe's mom though right?I am sure all was great until the alcohol overpowered peoples self control.I am really glad that this situation did not turn out worse that it already was.

Camdad.i honestly could not tell you what is right and wrong with the police report and paper.I was not there. But all I am saying is that the paper only named 3 of many people at this party and not all people that WERE there are bad. This is a big well known family with lots of love for each other. They are respected in Ventura.I said I grew up in the Avenue not them so right there is another assumption on your part.I am glad you are proud of were you come from.so am I.

BeaHappi the bartenders at the Knights are also very good and will stop "cut off" someone that has had too much. It was done at a recent wedding I was at.

well pjlove10 you can comment but stop with the smart remarks have respect for the bride and groom. Delfina was the aunt Joes mom. Alcohol was the problem and the bride ask to bartender to stop that was @ 9:30 they did alot of people came drunk already, and the cops had the wrong info because we saw the report There was no stabing what so ever the grooms Family and Brides family respect each other that it was not them that started, PEOPLE THAT WERE NOT INVITED they got kick out they notice them back in there and the Sercuty ask them to leave, The secury did a great job.

I feel so sorry for the bride and groom. What an awful thing to have happen at your wedding. It will color their memories forever and if they were having a honeymoon, I'm sure it put a damper on that. I'd be so angry at my family/guests if I were them.

I'm sure alcohol is definitely a contributing factor, but I don't see it as an excuse. So many people use it as an excuse and that's just old and tiresome. If you're the kind of person who will take out a knife (or a broken bottle) and use it to inflict injury on someone you're that kind of person sober or drunk. Just a bad egg. Yes, alcohol does exacerbate many situations and makes folks feel braver and angrier than they might otherwise, but I'm not ready to ban alcohol from events. I've been to many, many weddings and celebrations where there were open bars and there were no fights. I've never heard of such a thing. And, this is the 1st time I've ever heard of security guards being the norm at weddings. Sorry, not in my little world. If I were invited to a wedding and heard there would be security guards there that would be my 1st clue that this is probably not a crowd I'd want to hang with.

Maybe the bride and groom should consider a bit of distance from their families. A cross country move was the best thing for my relationship with my family :).

This wedding was more of WWE fight than a celebration of love and happiness. I give this marriage 2 years because the family will definetly be a factor in the divorce.

This was posted by someone who was at the party.
FYI the bride an groom have been together for like 5 years plus...They are just like all us other mexicans...we like to live in sin until we feel like getting married

and ShuldB can get away this crap:

"Us lazy Chicanos like to pop the kids out, collect the welfare checks...do the food stamp shuffle ,buy booze and have our kids for welfare increases and

What about this VERY RACIST COMMENT:

Livin- I believe that was one individual that made the "white trash" comment and you fired back with "sounds like brown trash to me." (Your comment was removed because that IS racist). If you have beef with who said the comment, address them, not an entire ethnicity.

From the sounds of it, ShuldB is Latino and was using satirical humor, playing on the stereotypes of his/her own race.

Good Luck and best endeavers. Your choice now. The community has obviously warned you.

sugaNspice

Do you know me.....my ethnicity?!?!

so shuldbworkin805 is the only person on here that is allowed to make racist comments, uh no matter what race you are, what shuldbworkin805 said was stereo typing Hispanics, oh so since shuldbworkin805 "appears" to be Hispanic, because of what they said it is okay?

So I AM HISPANIC, and I can say what I choose.

shuldbworkin805
Like I said before I am not keen on ignorant people, I am racist against stupid people.

Oh, did I strike a cord? What a stupid thing to say.

Posted by jamaro099 on July 21, 2008 at 5:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Livin---did you know that according to official census, Latinos/Hispanics are considered white? (GASP)?!?

If you ever fill out the demographic section of a questionnaire you'll see white -non-hispanic, white - hispanic.

I was shocked when I saw my birth certificate and it said caucasian.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think the separation happened when Latinos were fighting for the right to attend the same schools as white kids in California. The argument is that by definition we were white too.

Posted by LivinInPoorMansPV on July 21, 2008 at 5:59 p.m. (Suggest removal)

We are HUMANS, get OVER IT!

I don't understand? all i said is that someone should have knocked out some more of Delfina's teeth and the guys arrested .. MAX,TORRO,and the guy from S.P should grow up and my comment was removed? we have people on here making racist comments and such and all their comments are still up? wtf? I would love to know who removes these comments and if they have the right to remove them without our permission? Don't we have the freedom of speech? the worst thing i said was about her teeth? and it was just a joke because if you knew her you would know she don't have any.. lol IDK? All I know is this woman is trash her son is trash and Max and those "homies" are truly stupid for their actions knowing what they face given their history but they deserve what they get. I think we should have the right to say what we know and feel on these forums and the STAR staff should not be allowed to pick and choose what comments "THEY" think are exceptable or unexceptable! Those of you who feel the same should make a phone call to the STAR and complain! I am.

Posted by opns on July 21, 2008 at 6:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Hey Bigman, I read the removed post – such violent remark! Question, were you the stabber? Are you just coming back to the crime screne so you can see yourself? Could it be that the Star is just protecting you from your loose tongue? Maybe you should give them thanks. Back to your point, yeah she dosen’t have teeth, I was acquainted with her and yeah, 40 years later, reading the paper not much has changed.
We don’t want to see a change in venue if this goes to court. This is becoming high profile.
I posted earlier, but now what I'm hearing from others here, is that the groom is just as much messed up. That little young bride ought to find herself a real good family, unless she's a part of the mix.

Posted by packers4life on July 21, 2008 at 7:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

No one knows the real story and the paper and the cops are giving bad info to everyone. I must agree with LH 805 and say that people are taking this way out of proportion and i would just like to say give the groom and the bride some privacy in this time. It's messed up the way things happened but they did. Maybe there could have been things done differently. Everyone was having a great time until one fight broke out and led to chaos. So don't be so judgmental on the family with out knowing the facts of that evening. We just wish the bride and groom happiness for the future.

Posted by ReconByFire on July 21, 2008 at 7:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

WE ALL agree this is a very unfortunate incident, one that marred what should have been a special day for the newlyweds. A few posters claim to have witnessed the fight, and stated the trouble was caused by outsiders crashing the reception. From my experience, it's entirely plausible that outsiders caused the ruckus, family members and guests intervened, and the fight was on.
HAS ANYONE else noticed that party crashers are to blame for several violent incidents recently, including murders of young men in Moorpark and Camarillo? The Star reported that in both cases, undesirables crashed a party and started a fight, and the victims were killed while coming to the aid of a friend who was being attacked. I think we'll learn that crashing parties and inciting trouble is yet another way for these pukes to display their machismo and earn rank in their gang.
OBVIOUSLY, life is much different than the days when my friends and I would go out weekends, from one party to another, boozing it up the whole way. Most times we were allowed in because of a casual acquaintance. The fact that we didn't look like troublemakers must have helped, too. We weren't angels, nor were many of the other partygoers, but I don't recall much trouble, either. After all, everyone took pride in being M-E-L-L-O-W.
NOWADAYS, as a parent of teenagers, I wouldn't allow them to host a gathering in our home unless I know the invitees. I'd also station a responsible person at the door to bar anyone not invited from entering. No alcohol either. At the first sign of trouble inside or out, I'd call in the police to shut it down, and to chase off the crashers. The kids haven't asked to host a party given these conditions.
I REMIND my kids to be vigilant at the gatherings they attend. At any sign of trouble - nasty looks, even - they're to get to hell out of there, before the shooting starts. Fortunately, there aren't many big parties for kids to attend anymore.
AS FOR policing wedding receptions such as the one we're commenting on, what's next - tickets and picture badges for the invited guests? How else can partyholders assure the security of their guests, control people who drink too much or arrive drunk, protect property, etc. from troubles instigated by party crashers?
IN THIS CASE, I bet the city of Ventura bills the Knights of Columbus for the time of the 15 police officers needed to break up the gathering. Additionally, the hosts will probably forfeit the hall security deposit and will be billed for any damages, and the ABC will review the Knights' liquor license, among other arbitrary reactions.
GIVEN the tragic results of other recent parties, it's fortunate the legacy of this bash seems to be limited to a few minor injuries, slammer time for those arrested, bad memories for the newlyweds, and probably hazy recollections and major-league hangovers for many others.

Livin- ummm....I never indicated that I knew you or your ethnicity.

It's not up to me to decided who should or shouldn't make racist comments, I would think (actually wish) people have enough common sense to NOT make a racist remark in the 1st place. In my opinion, ShuldB was making a JOKE, your "brown trash" comment didn't sound like a joke to me. My bad if I'm wrong, but I've never heard my Hispanic friends call me "brown trash."

That's great you're Hispanic, join the club. Of course you can say whatever you choose, no one's stopping you...that's the beauty of your 1st amendment right and this forum--just as I can say whatever I'd like as well.

Okay, okay. I'm seriously going to give this story the benefit of the doubt here. I thought long and hard about it. So, when do we expect the truth about what really happened to come out? Amalia805, when you say things like "keep on talking it's just making us famous!" it kind of feeds into what people are commenting about. I'm sure there is a different point of view from the people that were "actually" there. But you have to realize that people do believe what they see and read in the media, and it's makes it even worse because this is truly something you only hear/read about at the end of the news hour for comic relief.

Take care.

So the mother of the groom isn't really the mother of the groom ... but the real mother of the groom won't tell the police what relationship the originally reported mother of the groom is to the groom, er, something like that. It's a real challenge to navigate the apellido jungle. And the fight? It is obviously the fault of the police.

I have never been to a "Spanish" wedding, nor have I ever been to Europe. Nor have I EVER attended a wedding with folks of latin/hispanic descent where someone has been hurt or killed. If that is the crowd that participates/attends/associates with the host then there might be an ugly situation develop, however; me and my family have been wise enough to avoid those types of crowds.

Your ridiculous generalizations are racist and need to be confronted. If that is your idea of "being real", then I agree it is "real" racism and "real" ignorance.
