Wood, Hall will test skills in Florida
They have nothing to gain from the college scouts. They have nothing to prove to the recruiting services.
For Santa Clara High's Cierre Wood and St. Bonaventure's Patrick Hall, attending the inaugural FBU Top Gun Showcase Camp this weekend is all about competition and a free trip to Florida.
The county's top two football prospects of the 2009 class boarded flights to Orlando, Fla., this morning to join several other high-profile recruits at the All-Star Sports Training Complex.
Although some camps and combines help players enhance their recruiting profile, Wood and Hall aren't in the market.
The multi-purpose running backs/defensive backs have already made their collegiate choices.
Wood has verbally committed to attend Notre Dame and Hall has verbally committed to attend USC.
"I just want to go out to this camp and compete with all the top guys and let everybody know about St. Bonaventure," Hall said. "People say we don't play anybody, and I feel like I can go to this top camp with the best players from around the country and show we should be on the radar."
The camp pays for all the travel expenses with the players only needing to bring spending money. The offer was enough for Wood to put aside some elevation apprehension and pack his bags.
"I don't like flying, but it is all for the fun," he said. "I really want to just go compete with other high-profile athletes and see what it's like."
Hall is relatively new to the camp scene. The first one he attended was the USC Rising Star Camp earlier this month.
By that time, the Trojans already knew everything about him.
Hall received an offer from the USC coaches in January, and didn't hesitate in accepting. He's wanted to attend the school since he was a kid and follow in the cardinal-and-gold footsteps of his cousin, Keary Colbert.
"I feel more comfortable knowing my college choice is out of the way," Hall said. "I can just go out this year and have fun."
Wood shares the sentiment, and is looking forward to enjoying the camp's side trip to Disney World before returning to California to prepare for the season.
"I don't have to worry about anything now," Wood said. "Just keep my grades up and that is about it."
